Male Full Frontal Nudity: Boardwalk Empire; Bobby Cannavale

We don't often see full frontal male nudity on TV, or even in feature films. And as an erotic romance author with over one hundred published works of fiction, I've always found that interesting. I do think there's a reason for this. I know some might disagree, and some would think this topic isn't important. But it's not something I see discussed often and when I see male full frontal in films and on TV I get curious.

We see breasts, a lot of ass, occasionally vagina, and pelvis shots, but never full frontal penis shots. So is there a double standard? Some might say we objectify women more than men. I think that's true to a certain extent, but I also think there might be another reason. More and more men are being objectified these days, but they still aren't showing everything.

I actually remember a web site a long time ago that was devoted to this very theme. They would follow films and TV shows where there was male full frontal nudity and post about it. It was always sketchy at best, with very little to see. And as I recall, there was a huge "thing" about Colin Farrell's male full frontal scene being removed from A Home at the End of the World because everyone thought it would be too distracting.

But last night on Boardwalk Empire Bobby Cannavale, who plays Gyp Rosetti, bared it all in a kinky sex scene that rivals anything I've seen on TV before with regard to male full frontal nudity. He not only showed penis, he showed it in a scene that lasted more than a split second. As one of my pithier writer friends on facebook would say, "Jebus Crisp, that thing was swinging back and forth."

It even bounced a few times, too.

And that's because it couldn't help itself. Anything that big is NOT going to remain stationary while a man walks naked down a hallway. And Bobby Cannavale was walking slowly. If he'd been running he would have had to hold it down with both hands.

The scene in which he showed all his full frontal began with Bobby having sex with a woman, both naked in a sleazy hotel room, with one end of a belt tied around Bobby's neck and the other tied to the bed post. Actually, that would have been enough for one book reviewer I know to shudder and cross her legs. But that scene led into one of those glorious fake gruesome massacres, with fake guns, plenty of fake blood, and everyone in the scene dying except Bobby Cannavale. When everyone was dead, Cannavale got up and started walking around in a daze, with the belt still tied around his neck and his penis swinging back and forth.

Of course you had to watch closely. I DRV Boardwalk Empire, so I rewound the scene a few times just to be sure I wasn't imagining it. Even though it was a longer full frontal shot than most, you could have missed it if you turned for a moment to get a snack. A few times Cannavale's head blocked the view. But it was there, in a rare moment of male full frontal we never see anywhere in the mainstream.

My theory as to why we rarely ever see male full frontal in films or TV shows is that most male actors are not willing to show what they have because they might be afraid is doesn't measure up to what viewers might expect of them. Would Tom Cruise have become the star he is if we'd seen a full frontal shot of him early in his career and it didn't measure up to what we expected? What about Ben Affleck?

I doubt anyone would throw Bobby Cannavale out of bed if he hadn't been blessed with something that impressive between his legs. He's a seriously good looking guy, in his forties, with a great body, and he's an excellent actor, too. But Cannavale is lucky in this respect. In this department there's a lot of pressure on men with regard to penis size and I'm sure a lot of actors don't want to take that risk. There was a great parody of this subject in a recent film I saw with Owen Wilson where Wilson is intimidated by a guy with a large penis in a locker room scene. And I wouldn't throw Owen Wilson out of bed for anything.

Women in films can get away with more in this regard because there seems to be varied opinions about breast sizes. Some like them big, others like them little and perky. But you rarely hear anyone say, "Wow, I like the smallest penis I can find, especially when it's little and perky." And, at a glance, vagina is vagina. I'm sure some would disagree with me here, but I'm talking about at a glance.

So I doubt we'll be seeing more male frontal nudity in the near future, unless they use stand-ins or some kind of prosthetic. It's just too intimidating for some actors and there's an unspoken bias that seems to linger beneath the surface all the time. We hear all the time that size doesn't matter. I've seen articles and blog posts written about how cliched it is to write male characters in erotic romances with extra large ones. But would people read an erotic novel if the main character had a small penis?

They say size doesn't matter, but I disagree...at least with respect to male full frontal nudity in films and on TV. I doubt Bobby Cannavale would have opted to do THAT scene if he'd been born with a pinkie finger between his legs.

Boardwalk Empire Male Full Frontal Nudity Revisted; The Rainbow Detective Agency by Ryan Field

Boardwalk Empire Male Full Frontal Nudity

Sometimes I like to revisit a few of the posts I've done over the years. This one dates back to October 2012 and it still receives hits...to my surprise. I'm not even that fond it of. At the time, I never took it all that seriously. Evidently it's a topic that must resonate with a lot of people.

From my archives:

We don't often see full frontal male nudity on TV, or even in feature films. And as an erotic romance author with over one hundred published works of fiction, I've always found that interesting. No Male Full Frontal Nudity for Bobby Cannavale in "The Watcher," Ryan Field Books

No Male Full Frontal Nudity for Bobby Cannavale in "The Watcher"

The moment I saw that Bobby Cannavale would be starring in the new Netflix series, The Watcher,  I was certain I would love it. I've been a fan of his for years, and I once posted about a full frontal nude scene he did in a previous series. The man was gorgeous then, and he's just as gorgeous today. Here's the link to that post.

In any event, I don't think we're going to see another male full frontal nudity scene in The Watcher. And I think it's because this particular series really doesn't call for it. That's the interesting thing I've learned about sex in movies and in books. There should always be a reason for any nudity or sex. And that even applies to what I write with erotic gay romance.

In fact, I once had a publisher ask me to add a sex scene to an erotic gay romance I had turned in for edits. And I was stunned because I found that it was almost impossible to add that extra sex scene. I figured out a way to do it to satisfy the publisher, but to this day I still don't like that sex scene and I still don't think it works. But when you're getting paid advances and royalties, you do whatever the publisher wants.

And frankly, I think Bobby Cannavale is just as great in The Watcher without the full frontal scene. There is, however, a scene where he starts to masturbate alone but he's interrupted. And even that's okay, because this really is a great series with a wonderful cast of characters, including Mia Farrow. It took me a minute to recognize her, but when I did it was truly and ah ha moment.

Here's more about The Watcher on IMDb. So far it's getting stellar ratings and reviews.

Bobby Cannavale Soft Porn; Davey Wavey Measures His Penis; 8 Stupid Things About Being Gay

Bobby Cannavale Soft Porn

I'm a fan of Bobby Cannavale, and was long before he did the male full frontal nude scene in Boardwalk Empire. In fact, I stopped watching Boardwalk Empire after they killed off his character. It was a good series of fiction wrapped around real life, but in the end they kept killing off the characters I loved the most, which frustrated me. And the big problem was they didn't introduce new characters that could compete with the old.

In any event, here's a link to information about a film with Bobby Cannavale that was based on the life of Linda Lovelace. The title is Lovelace, and oddly enough our good gay baiting buddy, James Franco, was up for the lead but didn't get it.

Lovelace is a 2013 American biographical drama film about porn actress Linda Boreman, better known as Linda Lovelace. It covers the part of her life when she was "20 to 32".[8] Directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, the film was written by Andy Bellin and stars Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, Sharon Stone, Adam Brody, and Juno Temple. The film had its world premiere on January 22, 2013, at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and opened in a U.S. limited release on August 9, 2013.

You can check that out here. It's a great film and Cannavale plays an interesting part.

Davey Wavey Measures His Penis

This one is a little old, but it's kind of amusing. I saw it last night and I don't remember posting about it at the time. Davey Wavey and Pornster, Jake Bass, did this online inches deal and measured their dicks. Davey Wavey claims normal is 5 1/4 inches while Bass says it's 7 inches. I'm more inclined to agree with Davey, at least from my experience.

In any event:

But at least there’s one thing these boys can agree on: Most men don’t know how to measure their dicks at all, regardless of their size. That’s why they’re offering a handy tutorial on how to measure your dick in “online inches,” which basically amounts to doubling whatever measurement you’ve taken.

Sounds kind of like something people do for Grindr to get dates or hook up.

You can watch the video here.

The comments won't surprise you.

8 Questionable Things About Being Gay

Here's another article written about gay men that could be questioned by gay men who don't fit the description. I don't even like to post about these things anymore, but I do it so that somewhere, somehow, someone might "get" it. In this case the real title of the piece is Here Are Eight Great Things About Being Gay.

In one section he posts gay men can't get pregnant...stating the obvious.

This could be questioned:

8. Gay bars

Face it, gay bars are superior to straight bars. The music is more fun, the drinks are more potent, and the people are in better shape (except for maybe at bear bars), not to mention better dressed (ditto). Most importantly, there’s not that awful denigration towards women you see at douchebag straight bars. Sure, we oogle each other, but no one feels subjugated (unless, of course, they want to).

He not only implies all gay men go to gay bars, he insults straight people, too. Not to mention the fact that gay bars are, and have been, closing down little by little all over the US thanks to hook up apps and lifestyle changes.

How about this one:

6. Open relationships

While there are certainly plenty of gay couples who practice monogamy, open relationships are much more common (or at least commonly discussed) among gay couples than among straight ones. And, no, that doesn’t mean the gay guys in said relationships are sluts (unless they want to be) or that they aren’t still deeply committed to one another. It just means they’re able to separate NSA sex from real love, and they know how to appreciate both simultaneously without all the petty drama.

Maybe this is sarcasm I'm not getting?

I could continue to dispute every word this guy writes, but it's not worth it. The rest of the mess is here.

This comes from the comment thread and I think this guy is the one who really speaks for many of  us:

Wow. 8 shallow, ridiculous points. Are we really that plastic?

And anyone can dress well or dress poorly. I’m gay. I don’t dress in expensive clothes… I sometimes find nice stuff to wear, but I also have my style (considering urban).

And gay bars aren’t all that great from my experience. Some gay clubs are good in Los Angeles (Arena+Circus for one… but they are said to be shutting their doors this year).

And there you go. This isn't just me questioning all these things. There are millions of gay men all over the world who are getting tired of this kind of stereotypical article filled with inaccuracy and misinformation.

Steve-O Is Naked; Bobby Cannavale Full Frontal Nude; Johnny Knoxville Sexiest Actor Alive

Steve-O Is Naked

This is one of those posts that fall under the category of male full frontal nudity in a general sense, and mainly because I find the double standards with regard to male vs. female full frontal interesting. More often than not female full frontal is done, where male full frontal seems so shocking and taboo. There are many social and cultural arguments that could be made about this it could be a text book. I even posted about how male full frontal was so shocking in Germany recently, but female full frontal seems to be almost normal. At least Steve-O of Jackass notoriety is helping to break some of the double standards, and without any reservations. And like him or not, he seems to do this with a good deal of humor.

Steve-O, aka Stephen Glover, is star of the hit MTV franchise JACKASS. Steve-O has also appeared on Dancing With The Stars and is currently the host of TruTV’s Killer Karaoke

You can view the photos here. I can't post them for copyright reasons. And, keep in mind they are NSFW.

A lot of my more judgmental peers who don't like sex, nudity, or anything erotic in books (or anything) won't care for this. But I think the topic of male full frontal nudity in itself is something most people find interesting, and not always sexual in nature. Sometimes it's funny. Other times it's emotional. Unfortunately, you will always hear someone complain that there's too much sex in books, movies, or on TV. But you'll never hear anyone complain there's not enough sex in books, movies, or TV because that's considered taboo, too. Well, not around here (smile).

Bobby Cannavale Full Frontal Nude

When I posted about Bobby Cannavale's full frontal nude scene back in 2012 I had no idea I would get so many e-mails about it...and continue to get them. Cannavale did the scene for Boardwalk Empire. And I remember watching it the night if first aired. It's an interesting scene because Cannavale is very well endowed, very attractive, and the clip itself is nothing I've seen before on TV. But more than that, in like almost any erotic romance ever written this full frontal nude scene from an artistic POV added to the storyline, made the scene more realistic (and interesting), and started a discussion in more than one place about male full frontal nudity.

In my last post about this I didn't have any links to a clip. This time I do. This link below is simple to use, but you'll have to turn off your content restriction for that particular web site. It's simple to do. Just click the green box and the clip will appear. In this case I'm not sure it's NSFW. This one falls under the category of something more artistic. At least I think so. I'm sure some would disagree.

You can get there from here.

Johnny Knoxville Sexiest Actor Alive

Also part of the Jackass fame and fortune is Johnny Knoxville, one of the most underestimated talents around. Knoxville is the creator of Jackass, and he's done several films I've found hysterical...Bad Grandpa was the most recent I saw. To add to Knoxville's list of credits, he's been chosen again as Sexiest Actor Alive by Glam'Mag.

For the second year in a row 2013 and 2014
The magazine has released its annual list of the 100 men who made history hotter, and the honors go to exactly who you thought they would (if you keep up with celebrity news): Johnny Knoxville, the creator of Jackass. For the second year in a row, our gorgeous hottie beat out some other equally hot men for the number one spot! And we can't say we disagree!

You won't see me disagreeing with this any time soon. Though I don't think Knoxville has ever done full frontal nudity I don't think anyone would mind if he did do it. In the film, Bad Grandpa, which is a dark comedy with a deeper message filmed in real places with hidden cameras, it was both funny and hard to watch Knoxville play the role of an older man because he looked so damn hot in those kaki pants. And yet it was one of the most touching films I've seen in a long time because of the relationship between the two main characters.

Male Full Frontal Nude: Bobby Cannavale; Jamie Dornan Full Frontal Nudity Fifty Shades of Grey

Male Full Frontal: Bobby Cannavale

I've had a few interesting e-mails since I posted about Bobby Cannavale's full frontal nude scene in Boardwalk Empire. He's been the topic of a lot of posts and articles since that scene. So here are a few more links that show photos and a video in more detail.

Here's a video of the scene in BE.

This one has  multiple photos.

Here's link to the stills at the OMG blog.

And here's one with better lighting.

I think it's interesting because the full frontal nude scene Cannavale did was important to the action and storyline in that particular episode. It showed another side of the character. But more important, even though it is still difficult to see anything that one simple full frontal scene has garnered so much attention.

Jamie Dornan Full Frontal Nudity Fifty Shades of Grey

I've posted a lot about the male lead in the Fifty Shades film adaptation, but I don't think I've mentioned that it has been rumored Jamie Dornan who snagged the role will do full Frontal nudity in the film.

Dornan said this:

The actor told Entertainment Weekly he’s not really sweating being naked or simulating kink: “I’m a fairly worldly guy. I grew up in a very liberal place. I’m not saying we had a playroom, but I’m not shocked by [the sex in the book.] It’s essential to tell the story.”

I think it will be interesting to see whether or not they actually do this...the full frontal. There is a TV show called "Hung" and not one hint of full frontal. Don't they realize that was the main reason most tuned in the first few times to watch Hung. And frankly, no one is going to see the Fifty Shades movie because of the complicated dialogue. They want sex and love and passion with as much full frontal as they can get.

In any event, you can read more here.

Best Gay Beach in New Jersey; New Jersey Publisher Hits Big

Due to all the devastation in New Jersey this past week, I wanted to post two things a lot of people might not know about New Jersey...one, a private gay beach, and two, an independent NJ publisher that did very well with a book that was adapted into a highly respected TV series on HBO.

I live in Pennsylvania now, and I love where I live. But I'm only one mile from the NJ border, and I still have trouble thinking of myself as a resident of PA...for twenty years now. It was so hard for me that it took me ten years to actually switch my driver's license from NJ to PA. I had a business in NJ and used that address all that time. But ten years ago I knew it was time to change and I turned in my NJ license and applied for one in PA. My hand shook and I didn't sleep for a week.

New Jersey receives a lot of bad press at times, with cheesy TV shows like "Jersey Shore," and jokes about what metropolitan North Jersey looks like from a plane (the back of a radio). But I was born there, grew up there, and went to college there. I was born in Newark and spent my summers in Lake Hopatcong (the largest lake in the state...48 miles around by car). I grew up in Southern NJ in Salem County, which is more like Texas than anything anyone ever sees on TV or reads about in magazines. They even have a rodeo. I wrote about that in a short story once titled, "Kevin Loves Cowboys." And I went to college in Madison NJ, at Fairleigh Dickinson University, a college town surrounded by other private universities like Drew University and Saint Elizabeth's. So the picture of what people get when they see NJ at a glance is far from accurate in most cases.

One of my favorite places in New Jersey has always been Belmar. It's a small coastal town that's one hour from New Hope, with a quiet gay beach near 2nd Avenue.

The next most well known gay beach is in Belmar at 2nd Avenue and the boardwalk. This location has been LGBT friendly and frequented by gays for more than 30 years. 2nd Avenue is at the northernmost area of Belmar's great boardwalk. Make sure you get a beach badge for a day at this beach or you will be fined plenty. There are bars and refreshment stands within a convenient walk from the gay beach.

It was the first gay beach I ever went to and I was scared to death. The moment I got there, and saw the quiet streets and well kept homes in Belmar, I stopped worrying. It's not the kind of gay beach where you'll find a lot of cruising or nudity. At least I never did. But it is the kind of beach where gay people can meet other gay people without working too hard at it. I still go whenever I get the chance. And even more interesting is that the gay people blend right in with the straight people and no one seems to notice, or care. It's always been that way as far as I can remember. Unfortunately, you don't hear about that part of New Jersey often...not even in gay circles.

I recently discovered this information while I was writing a post about a full frontal nude scene on the TV show, "Boardwalk Empire," with actor Bobby Cannavale.  An independent publisher in New Jersey pubbed the book, "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City." The publisher is Plexus Publishing, Inc, and they are based in Medford, NJ, which is considered South Jersey, not far from Philadelphia and New Hope.

I've been watching the TV show for years and I never knew this. I had to dig around while writing a blog post to find out by accident. I just always assume, like most people, TV shows like that are either concepts or based on popular books pubbed by larger publishers. For a small publisher to have a small book turned into a hit TV series on HBO isn't bad, not by any means. Only you never hear about that anywhere unless you look for yourself.

Last week New Jersey was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, and right now they are in the process of putting everything back together. Tomorrow there's supposed to be another nor'easter coming up the coast that might cause more devastation. And I wanted to post something positive about New Jersey no one ever hears about. Especially the part about the gay beach in Belmar. The gay community tends to be trendy, and the old circuit boys who are now filled with botox, covered with acne from too many steroids, and way too tan flock to Ft. Lauderdale in droves. It's also cheap to live down there right now. Some wind up in Palm Springs because that's another trending gay city. And others still gravitate toward cliched Key West where the crowd isn't quite as filled with botox, but they are still hanging on to their mustaches and old disco music from the 70's. And there's nothing wrong with that. I like to visit all those places. Following trends is part of gay culture and probably always will be. And that's no stereotype that's a fact.

But there are other aspects to gay culture and New Jersey we don't hear about often. There are well respected publishers doing excellent things right now. There are excellent colleges and universities like Princeton. And places like the gay beach in Belmar, NJ, offer an alternative to gay people who don't want to be part of the gay cliche. I have no doubt NJ will come back in full force from what's happened in the past week. In fact, I think it will come back better than before.

Male Full Frontal Nudity ll: Michael Pitt and Zack McGowen

After posting earlier this week about a male full frontal nudity scene with Bobby Cannavale in "Boardwalk Empire," I remembered a few other scenes I'd happened to notice recently and figured I'd post about them, too. And it's Friday. We're in the middle of a vicious election, gas prices are soaring at record highs, and Joy Behar's big mouth is still running overtime. So it's nice to take a break from it all for a day or two.

I find it interesting that actor Michael Pitt...who happens to be one of the best actors in Hollywood with or without his clothes...did a full frontal nude scene in a film called "Dreamers" (2003) and he also starred in "Boardwalk Empire" when it first launched. In fact, he was the only reason I bothered to watch BE in the beginning, and then they killed off his character and I'm only hanging on now by a thin thread (which has nothing to do with male full frontal...the storyline's just not keeping my interest).

As far as I know, Michael Pitt did not do any full frontal nudity in BE. Which is slightly disappointing because he did such a great scene in "Dreamers."  You can watch the entire scene here. I often wonder if some actors do certain scenes at the beginning of their careers in order to get recognized, and then never do them again once they are established. Tom Cruise did more than a few scenes without his clothes, so did Brad Pitt. I don't think either one ever did full frontal, but they showed plenty in the beginning and haven't showed anything since then. This tells me that there's no limit to what some people will do for a buck in the beginning, and art has nothing to do with it...and I'm not one to judge nudity in films or TV shows. I actually think nudity, when done well, adds to the artistic reality of certain scenes and there's nothing dirty or obscene about it. Kind of like nude models in drawing 101 freshman year of college. At first it's a little awkward, but after fifteen minutes the nudity isn't an issue anymore. I've been to plenty of nude beaches in my time, and I felt awkward at first about stripping down to nothing. But it didn't take long before it felt perfectly natural.

In any event, another more recent male full frontal nude scene was done in "Shameless," by actor Zack McGowen. In this case, the full frontal nudity did add to the artistic quality of the the scene in which he did it, and that show is so reality oriented I think it's like cheating if there aren't a few nudes scenes. It also added to the popularity of Zack McGowen, which stands to reason because male full frontal is considered so taboo. What he had between his legs was nothing to be ashamed about. You don't see a nice one THAT nice every day of the week, in real life or on TV. Here's a link to photos I can't post here where you can see it in all its glory yourselves.

Davey Wavey: Nude

Last November I posted a link to a site where there are Davey Wavey nude photos. Today I'd like to post about how Davey Wavey has reacted to those photos, and how he's not making any apologies to anyone. I actually didn't know whether or not he'd posted them himself or someone had discovered them. He explains it all here.

Do I need to say anything else? I think it's a good example of owning your decisions, taking a positive stand, and never letting anyone else intimidate you for something you've done previously. I've always thought that was important, even for authors. I once wrote about a burping penis in a parody gay romance loosely based on the TV show American Idol. And it was interpreted as serious literature by one dumb, but vicious, blogger. I have no regrets. I might even do it again.

Fuck with me: it's the best attitude sometimes. We should all take it more seriously :)

Here's the youtube link, where you can watch many other Davey Wavey videos on all kinds of gay topics.

Anal Hygiene

Speaking of parody and comic relief, I've been working on edits for a new book in the Chase series, Chase of a Holy Ghost, and I needed something that would make the storyline a little lighter. Actually, I needed a few things because the book can be emotional at times. So I wrote a scene where a ridiculous webcaster spoke about anal hygiene and referred to it as anal douchery. You should have seen the comments I received from the editor I hired.

On a more serious note, the fact is that there are certain things gay men should know about anal hygiene. As far as I know, I have never heard once of a parent explaining THIS to a gay teen when talking about the facts of life. In fact, I often wonder how younger gay men now learn about the facts of life with everything becoming more open nowadays. Do parents talk about these things with gay teens? Or do gay teens still get their information about the facts of life everywhere but at home?

In any event, once again, here's Davey Wavey talking about anal douching. I won't get into details here, but I often mention it in books just in case younger gay people are reading. It is important information every gay man should know...or at least almost every gay man.

For two men to have anal sex with each other, a certain routine of cleansing must take place. Perhaps, during your first sexual encounter, neither you nor your partner realized this. And then things got disgusting and you never, ever wanted to be a gay man again. And then you found out about cleaning one’s bottom — and how it’s an activity that’s best silently acknowledged, but never spoken about, because: ew. Take it away, Davey.

Here's a link to a video where Davey explains it in detail.

Larry Kramer's Male Full Frontal Nudity

I've posted about Larry Kramer and The Normal Heart, many times. I don't always agree with Kramer and his beliefs, but this article to which I'm linking shows how difficult it was for him when he first started out. I have no doubts about that. It's still difficult for all gays, but it must have been torture way, way back then. He produced a film, Women in Love, and it became famous for the biggest taboo of all time: male full frontal nudity.

As Kramer recalled, adapting Women in Love to the screen was the easy part. Getting it produced was much more difficult because it involved the arduous task of negotiating a final approved cut of the movie with the British Board of Film Censors. Even before production began, Kramer sent a copy of his script to the board's chief, a man named Lord John Trevelyan, who liked to brag, "We're paid to have dirty minds." Trevelyan didn't hold out much hope for Kramer's project and told him he doubted Women in Love could be filmed at all. "The wrestling scene," as it was soon to be dubbed, and its male frontal nudity sent immediate shock waves through the BBFC.

If you follow my posts on male full frontal nudity in films, you'll see not all that much has changed since Kramer used it in his film. I think the most recent full frontal male scene that I've noticed was with Bobby Cannavale in Boardwalk Empire, which I posted about here. That was in 2012. I'm sure there might be one or two I've missed. But the point is you don't see it often.

More here.

FREE Gay Excerpt

Here's an excerpt from my still-being-edited (and formatted for digital) WIP. It's titled, Chase of a Holy Ghost, and will be released sometime at the end of this month.

On Saturday mornings, Jim usually went for a long ride on his favorite horse way out beyond the back pasture.  He'd always been big on routine.  He wore his favorite old cowboy boots that morning, jeans so old they were torn at the knees, and one of Len's old cowboy hats because he liked the way it felt.  When he reached the creek he stopped and smiled for a moment.  He'd scattered Cain's ashes there, and then Carol Greene's ashes because there hasn't been anyone else willing to give Carol a funeral service.  Her roots went back to Amish culture and she'd been shunned for being gay and a transgender.  He would have climbed off the horse and sat on a rock for a while to pay his respects.  It was one of those bright mornings with a slight breeze, perfect for daydreaming.  But he had to get back to the house before his mother-in-law, Doris Branson, arrived.

A few hours later, Jim jogged down the back stairs and heard voices in the main hallway.  Clinger was barking and Jim couldn't make out what they were saying, so he smoothed out his jeans, took a quick look in a mirror next to the back staircase, and then headed to the front of the house to see what was happening.

When he reached the hallway, he stopped and took a deep breath.  He held it for a moment and exhaled slowly.  Doris was hugging Len, and Jim's mom and dad were standing on the sidelines waiting to greet her.  Jim's mom caught a glimpse of him in the doorway and she rolled her eyes.  Jim shrugged and smiled, and then stepped into the hallway braced for battle.

As Jim walked up beside Len, Doris turned from Len and looked down at Culum.  "And how are you, young man," Doris said, with her deep raspy voice.  "Are you happy to see grand-ma-ma?"

Culum blinked and took a step back toward Clinger.  He called Jim's mom grandma and he'd told Jim he didn't like calling Doris grand-ma-ma, with the accent on the last syllable.  Jim sent Culum a look, letting him know he wanted him to behave.  No one appreciated Doris referring to herself as grand-ma-ma.  COAL Ranch wasn't Downton Abbey.  It was Chatsworth, California in the twenty-first century.  But in order to keep the peace, so to speak, Jim had warned everyone to humor Doris Branson's pretentious quirks and make her feel at home for as long as she was there.  If that meant calling her Your Royal Highness Jim would have done it.

Doris's head jerked to the side.  "What's wrong?  Aren't you happy to see grand-ma-ma?" Her voice grew deeper and Jim had to wonder if she had a single nurturing bone in her body. Then he dismissed the thought, feeling guilty because he didn’t know her all that well yet.

Culum looked at Jim one more time, and then he nodded and said, "Yes, I'm happy to see you."  He refused to say grand-ma-ma unless it was the last resort.  He usually referred to Doris with pronouns.

Jim covered his smile with his palm. Culum had stubborn tendencies that often amused him.

Then Radcliff reached out to shake Doris's hand.  "It's good to see you again, Doris.  It's been a while.  You're looking well, indeed."  Jim sometimes had a feeling his dad flirted with Doris, which tended to make Helen's lips turn down.

Doris looked Jim's dad up and down and said, "Yes, too long, darling.  It's good to see you again, Randolph."  She ran her long French-tipped fingernails down his sleeve and batted her eyelashes.  Doris often flirted back, within reason, which also tended to make Helen's eyebrows arch.

Helen rolled her eyes.

Radcliff didn't bother to correct her about his name.  He seemed to know it would be a waste of time.

Helen reached out to hug Doris, but Doris took a step back and reached for Helen's hand instead.  "Hello, dear, good to see you again."  Doris never used Helen's name.  She didn't even bother to mispronounce it.  She always referred to her as dear or hon.  She turned to Len and said, "I hope my visit isn't a bother.  I didn't know Jim's parents would be here, too.  I can stay at a hotel."

Jim thought he had mentioned this to Doris.  There had been so many things happening he could have forgotten.

Helen smiled and said, "If that would make you feel more comfortable.  I'm sure there are a few fine hotels nearby, dear."

Doris glared at Helen for a moment, and then laughed.  "I love your sense of humor, hon."

Helen smiled.  "And I love yours even more, darling."

Len smiled and looked up at the ceiling.

Jim shot his mom a look for the bitchy hotel remark she'd made.  He wanted to laugh, but knew it would only get him into trouble.  Jim actually had a better relationship with Doris than her own son.  It had been that way from the first day they'd met.  It wasn't that Doris thought of Jim as her own son.  In this case it was more that she felt close to Jim and thought they were a lot alike in many ways.  Doris had always thought of herself as a victim living among the strong controlling Branson men and she'd learned how to survive with them by not backing down.  She considered Len, her own son, just as vicious as all the other Branson men, and often sided with Jim as if he were an ally.  Although Len could be aggressive and controlling, Jim humored her.  He'd never considered himself a victim.

So Jim stepped up and broke into the conversation before Doris could reply to Helen's catty remark with one of her own and said, "I just finished getting the guest suite on the third floor ready and I don't want to hear anything about a hotel."  He put his arms around Doris, hugged her, and said, "You're staying right here with us and that's that.  And why didn't you let me know you were here so I could drive out to get you myself?  I thought you would call."

For the first time since she'd arrived she smiled and said, "Thank you so much.  I prefer my own driver from Branson Communications.  We pay him enough."  She looked at everyone else in the room, including poor little Culum who was just standing there observing on the sidelines, and said, "Now that Jim's here everything will be fine.  He clearly knows how to make an older, lonely widow feel at home."

While Doris sent Len a fierce look, Jim winked at Helen and said, "I'll help Doris get settled."

Helen took the hint and said, "We were just leaving.  We're taking Culum to the zoo this afternoon.  Would you like to join us, Doris? We don’t mind waiting."

Doris made a face and said, "I think not, dear."  She glanced at Culum and frowned.  "Grand-ma-ma will schedule something cultural for you while she's here if there's time."  That could have meant anything from the symphony to a trip on her private jet up to wine country where Doris had an established relationship with a Catholic bishop.  Being a strict Catholic with a great deal of money, she had established relationships with priests, nuns, and bishops all over the world.  In fact, she'd met two Popes in person.  She collected priests and nuns the same way other people collect stamps.  Back east, she often traveled with them.  But the one in wine country, she claimed, gave her special blessings and she usually flew up to visit him while on the west coast.

With a blank expression, Culum nodded.  The last time she'd been there and she'd taken him to a cultural event they'd wound up touring a convent where the nuns weren't allowed to speak.  The poor kid spotted a life-sized crucifix on a wall in the dark convent, screamed at the sight of a dead man hanging with blood dripping from his hands and feet, and had nightmares for one solid week.  Although Jim had been raised Episcopal, and Len Catholic, they weren't part of any organized religion anymore and they'd decided to raise Culum knowing both faiths.  Of course Doris thought Culum should be raised Catholic, and Radcliff and Helen thought he should be Episcopal.  But Jim and Len had made it clear they wanted to raise Culum their own way and he could one day make his own choice on religion.  And until organized religion fully accepted gay couples and gay marriage, they didn't want to expose him to hate.

Jim reached for Culum's backpack on a chair in the hallway and handed it to Helen.  "I packed a few things for him."  Then he handed Helen a box and said, "And this is for you to put in your purse."  He didn't like to make a big thing about this.  The box contained an epi-pen just in case Culum needed it.  He'd experienced multiple bee stings once and developed a deadly allergy to bees as a result.  Jim lived in constant fear of this.  There was nothing he could do but watch and be prepared.  If Culum had had an allergy to shell fish or nuts Jim could have made a conscious effort to avoid those things in a more relaxed manner, but bees were everywhere and you couldn't trust them.

After they all walked Helen, Radcliff, and Culum out to the Tahoe and saw them off, Len turned toward the long black limo that had brought Doris there from the airport and said, "I'll get your luggage, mother."  He called her mother all the time, not mom; she expected it and Len preferred it.

Doris waved her hand and said, "Just get your man to do it.  I'm going upstairs with Jim."

"We don't have a man, mother," Len said.  "You know that.  We do things around here on our own.  It's very casual.  We're just normal folks."

Doris glanced around the property with a disapproving look.  Even though COAL Ranch was one of the finest and most elegant ranches in Chatsworth, compared to her estate in Connecticut it was a small time affair.  She frowned and said, "I see that."  She patted Jim's back and said, "Poor thing.  We need to have a long talk soon."

Jim looked at Len and said, "Len will be more than happy to bring your things upstairs.  It's no trouble at all, Doris."

Doris looped her arm through Jim's and they headed back toward the house.  "I don't know how you do it, you poor thing.  No full time help here at all, working full time yourself, and raising a child.  You really do have to be more assertive, Jim.  I don't care if Len changed his name to Mayfield, my maiden name after my father.  Len is still a Branson.  These goddam Branson men will eat you alive if you're not assertive.  You should demand full time domestic help, at least a housekeeper.  I learned a long time ago that you have to stand up to the Branson men or they will step all over you, trust me."  She clenched both fists and said, "You have to be tough, three steps ahead of them at all times, and never back down.  That's why I'm still here and Len's father isn't.  He wasn't going to kill me first."  She sounded proud of the fact that she'd outlived her husband as if they'd been racing to the finish.
