Revisiting SCOTUS Ruling and Gay Marriage; Amway Boycott; Chick-Fil-a

I'm really busy with family things this week, so here's an older post from 2012. I think it shows some of the changes we've been through.

There's been a lot written about SCOTUS and gay marriage, so this is from my inbox from Freedom to Marry:

Just moments ago, the U.S. Supreme Court set the clock ticking on the important work we need to do to secure our next wave of wins in 2013.

The Court announced that it will hear a challenge to the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, the federal law that discriminates against legally married same-sex couples, and to California's Proposition 8.
Ryan,it is urgent that we now create the climate that will embolden the Supreme Court to strike down DOMA and Prop 8 as unconstitutional. We know from the Roadmap to Victory national strategy exactly how to do that: win more states and win over more hearts and minds.
Please join us in this essential work by making a donation today:

These big steps in the Supreme Court cap a transformative year in which we paved the pathway for President Obama's support, led the campaign to secure a freedom to marry plank in the Democratic Party platform, and won the freedom to marry at the ballot in Maine, Maryland and Washington while defeating an anti-marriage amendment in Minnesota.

We now must turn this irrefutable momentum into more wins.

Help us make 2013 - like 2012 - a year of triumph and transformation by bringing down DOMA and Prop 8. Make a donation today and make your voice heard in the Supreme Court in the most powerful way possible - with more wins.

Thanks for all you do,

Evan Wolfson
Founder and President, Freedom to Marry

I'm on the fence about boycotts, only because I'm not sure they work. But it seems to be something getting attention, so here's an e-mail I got from Fred Karger about Jane Lynch and the Amway Boycott:

I hope you can see that. Here's more:

The Amway Boycott covers all holdings of the DeVos family and are listed on: They include all Amway divisions, the Orlando Magic NBA team, all 26 Fox Automotive Group Dealerships, MVP and RDV Health Clubs and all the hotels owned by the DeVos family including the Amway Grand Plaza, J W Marriott and the Marriott Courtyard all in in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Jane Lynch and 3 Elected Officials Say “Boycott Amway”

Actress and Out Magazine “Entertainer of the Year” Jane Lynch endorsed the Amway Boycott recently. She is joined this week by South Dakota’s first openly gay elected official State Representative Joshua Boschee and Chapel Hill, North Carolina Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt and City Council Member Lee Storrow. All three signed Boycott Amway postcards addressed to Amway owner Doug DeVos.

The postcard campaign launched in September has resulted in a deluge of the bright yellow cards mailed in to DeVos, according to Amway Boycott founder and Rights Equal Rights President Fred Karger.

“Multilevel Marketing” Postcard Campaign
to Amway Owner Doug DeVos

Following the Amway model, Rights Equal Rights has expanded its Postcard Campaign by asking Amway Boycott supporters to get their friends, family members, neighbors and coworkers to send in the colorful postcards to Amway CEO Doug DeVos. Our supporters will in turn will ask their friends, family members, neighbors and co-workers to join the Boycott and take similar action. According to Karger, we have already sent in hundreds and hundreds of the bright yellow cards to Doug DeVos asking him to match his $500,000 contribution to NOM by contributing an equal amount to LGBT organizations.

“Every single day we mail a batch of our Boycott Amway postcards to Mr. DeVos. We will continue to take actions in order to bring more attention to the Boycott in 2013,” said Karger. “During California’s Prop 8 campaign we boycotted four of the largest contributors to the Yes on 8 campaign and we settled two of them when the companies gave equal amounts or more to LGBT organizations.”

“The Manchester Hotels Boycott was never settled, but owner Doug Manchester, who gave $125,000 to Yes on Prop 8, publically admitted that his Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego was losing $1 million per month because of the boycott. He has since sold that hotel, apologized for his contribution through a spokesman and said that he would never give money to take away same-sex marriage again.

If You Don’t Like Chick-fil-A -- You’ll Really Hate Amway

“We will be reaching out to many more organizations and individuals to join the Amway Boycott utilizing the theme, “If you didn’t like Chick-fil-A (for all of owner Dan Cathy’s big anti-LGBT contributions and statements) just wait until you hear about Amway,” said Karger.

Steve Grand an Inspiration; His Kinky Gay Porn Past; The Rainbow Detective Agency by Ryan Field

Steve Grand an Inspiration

Here's a nice article about how Steve Grand helps gay people feel less lonely.

‘What really made a difference for me was the people that would write in and some of these people would tell me their life stories or stories of their All-American boys that got away. That made me realize this is why I did this — to connect people and to connect with people.” Grand recalls receiving thousands of letters from gay people who thanked him for them feel less alone in the world.

He really is an inspiration and a man who breaks so many barriers for other gay men, both in his age group and for all ages.

You can read the rest here. His new album is due out on March 24th, and I'll be downloading that the first minute I can.

His Kinky Gay Porn Past

Here's a story about a guy who did gay for pay porn about twenty years ago...when he really needed the money. Before I get into this any further, I have to admit I just don't get that. I don't think it would be possible for me to do straight porn for any amount of money. Not physically possible.

But this guy did do straight porn first, and then he got into gay porn later.

“He said he didn’t have any more work like that but if I was willing to try something else he could get me some work. I said I’d try anything, I should have clarified that. He got me a job, a one day shoot on the other side of the state he said they were eager to work with me so I drove over there.”

At first he refused doing gay porn, but then settled on doing it for $3,000. After that, he continued doing gay porn for the next year and a half. (I can't even imagine doing straight porn once, let alone for over a year.)

He stopped doing gay porn when he met a "girl" and he's been married to her or 18 years. She knows nothing about his gay porn past. And now he's wondering if he should tell her.

You can read the rest here. Frankly, I think he should keep it to himself. If he had done straight porn and he had kept that to himself no one would mind. Or, he would have told her years ago without thinking twice. Should it be any different with gay porn? I don't think so. But it usually is different...there's always shame involved.

Nutella Bans "Lesbian"; Jack Falahee Won't Admit Sexuality; Meadows Are Not Forever

Nutella Bans "Lesbian"

In France, the Nutella company launched some kind of marketing campaign that allows people to customize their own jars with personal messages.

Evidently, they also decided to censor words like "Lesbian," "Muslim," and "Obese."

Internet users quickly discovered that they were not allowed to certain words in their messages, including the word 'lesbienne.'

They then opened the source code of the page to see the full list of the banned words.

They included a slew of insults and their spelling variations, and words related to unhealthy diets, such as 'obese,' 'diabetes,' 'fat' and controversial ingredient 'palm oil.'

While gay and homosexual passed, 'Muslim' and 'lesbian' were forbidden.

'Negative or insulting messages were directly removed from the field of possibilities,' Nutella said a statement.

If this is true, that's the worst kind of censorship there is. In full disclosure, I always have a jar of Nutella in the house. I won't be stocking any more after this.

You can read the rest here.

Jack Falahee Won't Admit Sexuality

I've already posted about this actor, Jack Falahee, and how he won't say whether or not he's gay. And he's really sticking to this, with a few more additional comments.

'We don’t ask the actor playing James Bond what his sexual preference is,' he said this week on SiriusXM Progress. 'So I don’t know what it is, really, with trying to out actors who portray gay characters on television. But it is some sort of fascination in society.'

The freshman series wraps up its season next week and Falahee's law student character of Conor Walsh and his memorable trysts with several different men have catapulted the previously unknown actor to stardom.

Being gay is not about sexual preference. That's just a small part of it. It's not a "fascination." It's about self-respect, pride, and something called equality. As a gay man who gets a kick in the face almost every single day of my life, I not only find it disingenuous of Falahee, but ignorant. He's the one who decided to play gay on TV and collect a nice big paycheck. I've never advocated forcing anyone to come out, however, under these circumstances with someone this vocal I personally think Falahee's words are an insult to every single gay person who has ever come out and suffered discrimination.

Falahee is only promoting more shame...the shame that still exists if you say you're gay. The shame that still exists if someone calls you gay and you're not. And that's what I dislike the most about him.

Boners: Awkward Moments; Homophobic Teacher Sues; Madonna Falls on Her Ass; Amazon and Ellora's Cave

Boners: Awkward Moments

As the title suggests, this is pretty boilerplate. It's a humorous video where guys describe their most awkward boner moments.

Morning wood is one thing, but what happens when the gears down under start turning at much more unwanted moments? Things get awkward, and fast.

From sex pills to planes to sheer unexplainable bad timing, watch as these guys describe their awkward boner moments.

I remember reading once on a writer's blog that "morning wood" is cliche in erotic romance novels. And to be honest as a man I never got that. Why would something so important to men be considered cliche in sexy novels?

In any event, you can get there from here.

Homophobic Teacher Sues

It always amazes me when I see how litigious these homophobes can be. There's now a teacher suing a New Jersey school district because they fired her after she allegedly went into a homophobic tirade...where she shouted about her religious beliefs. Yes, once again, it's all about these religious wing nuts and their hate for gay people. She's claiming they violated her right to free speech...yes, free speech.

This is what she did, of course, on Facebook:

The incident happened back in September 2011. After noticing a poster for LGBT Month hanging in the school hallway, Knox took to Facebook to express her outrage, writing

She said this:

“Why parade your unnatural immoral behaviors before the rest of us? I DO NOT HAVE TO TOLERATE ANYTHING OTHERS WISH TO DO. I DO HAVE TO LOVE AND SPEAK AND DO WHAT’S RIGHT!”

And this:

She then listed all her religious objections to the billboard, which included statements from the bible about homosexuality, calling homosexuality a sin and an act of “disobedience to God,” and calling for salvation through Mr. Jesus H. Christ.

You can read the rest of the details here. This is an interesting case to follow for two reasons. The homophobic vs free speech aspect goes without saying. But should a public school teacher be allowed to even mention anything religious in a public school? What defines hate speech?

Madonna Falls on Her Ass

This article's melodramatic title makes it appear Madonna almost died as a result of a wardrobe malfunction. You can be the judge of that yourselves.

The Living for Love hit maker was wearing a black Armani cape. The plan was for the backup dancer to pull the cape off to reveal a sparkly red getup underneath. But before doing so, Madonna was supposed to untie the strap around her neck.

Evidently the strap was too tight because when the backup grabbed the cape, he accidentally pulled Madonna down with it.

In other words, she fell on her fifty something year old ass. You can call that ageism or whatever PC term you want. But in this particular case she's well into her fifties and trying to behave like someone in their twenties and it just doesn't work. Life doesn't work that way: we all get old. There's nothing wrong with being fifty-five, and you can still look great and feel great, but you can't turn back the clock. She should be glad she didn't break a fucking hip.

Sorry if I'm not all broken up about this. There are people of all ages dying of cancer, AIDS, and suffering in all kinds of ways that none of us even want to imagine. I know this first hand. Madonna's senior citizen ass will survive this attempt at freebie publicity.

You can read more here.

Amazon and Ellora's Cave

Here's a link to a publishing related article that talks, in part, about how Amazon and e-books are changing and how those changes are hitting e-publishers. I honestly don't know how else to put that, because it's not a simple matter. And I think every digital only author and digital only publisher has been experiencing something similar to this for a while now.

I'm not commenting on this one because it is so complicated, because publishing and e-books are constantly changing, and because I think of Ellora's Cave as one of the digital book publishing pioneers. I have never worked with them, or had anything published with them, but I have been working with other small digital pioneers for over a decade now and I owe a great deal to them all. So I can't be objective this time.

And frankly, I still can't figure out half the shit Amazon pulls. And do they pull shit!

You can read this here. There's also mention of a legal matter between Ellora's Cave and some small time romance book reviewer in the mid-west most people never heard of, or care much about. I think it's one of those cute kitten blogs with droll elitist snark that got tired years ago...but don't quote me on that. I'm not up on my droll little bloggers. It's just interesting from a small time blogging POV.

Gay Family Emojis iOS; Michael Sam and the NFL; Patricia Arquette Criticized by Gays

Gay Family Emojis iOS

Apple is now doing racially diverse and LGBT family images, which is part of iOS's 8.3 update.

The new update includes emojis with six different skin tones, as well as a selection of family-based emojis which include children posing with exclusively male or female parents.

It's an excellent idea and I wish more greeting card companies would do this. Try to imagine what it must be like to go shopping for your same sex husband for anniversaries or any significant occasion. There's not much out there.

You can read the rest here.

Michael Sam and the NFL

I posted yesterday about openly gay football player, Michael Sam, being part of the line up for the next Dancing with the Stars. I guess people have been questioning him about football and this is how he's replying:

'Football remains my unquestioned number 1 priority,' he tweeted. 'However, while I continue to train and stay ready, I am ecstatic to participate in a fun, athletic competition like so many players before me have done,'

Sam added: 'Filming this off season is very flexible and allows me to be part of the veterans combine if accepted or any other workouts.'

There's more here. I love Michael Sam for many reasons, but so far I haven't seen one thing in a gay publication mentioned about whether or not he's going to be dancing with a man in DWtS. And if he's not I don't think I'll watch this time. I know men dance with women and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I dance with women all the time. I know women dance with women and there's nothing wrong with that. But you never see two men ballroom dancing on television and that bothers me. So I can't help but think it's a bit disingenuous for Sam to go through this entire public coming out process and wind up dancing with a woman instead of a man.

There's just something very wrong about that for me. If you're gay, be gay all the way.

Patricia Arquette Criticized by Gays

When Rose McGowan made snarky comments about gay men being more interested in pride floats and skimpy bathing suits than supporting women's rights I have to admit I did get offended by what she said and the way she said it. But I'm not offended in the least by what Arquette said. I completely agree with her.

'To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights,' she said. 'It’s time to have wage equality once and for all. And equal rights for women in the United States of America.'

Arquette went on to elaborate on her comments backstage, arguing that it’s time people of colour and the LGBTI community to fight for women’s rights, like women have fought for theirs.

'So the truth is, even though we sort of feel like we have equal rights in America, right under the surface, there are huge issues that are applied that really do affect women,' she said. 'And it’s time for all the women in America and all the men that love women, and all the gay people, and all the people of color that we've all fought for to fight for us now.'

She was criticized in a number of ways for making these statements, and you can read more about them here.

This isn't the second or third time I've heard women asking for help from the gay community. And I do think many gay men like me do support them, but there are still a lot more out there who don't. And that needs to change. In case you haven't noticed, fighting for equal rights is NOT exclusive to the gay male community.

Will Michael Sam Dance With Men on Dancing With the Stars; Neil Partick Harris Mixed Reviews; Gay Sex in The Imitation Game

Will Michael Sam Dance With Men on Dancing With the Stars

This looked a little odd to me at first...reading about Michael Sam being on Dancing With the Stars. I like DWtS, don't get me wrong, and I like Michael Sam. One of the few things I've never done in my life that I've always wanted to do was good ballroom dancing. I watch in amazement when I see good ballroom dancing. It's the reason I love Silver Linings Playbook so much...he couldn't dance well, but he pulled it off with determination and a lot of hard work.

But, this should be interesting with Michael Sam.

Michael Sam has been chosen to appear on ABC's Dancing With the stars.

The first openly gay player ever drafted by a National Football League team will be among the celebrities competing when the season's roster is unveiled Tuesday (24 February) on ABC's Good Morning America, according to TMZ.

Sam made the cover of Sports Illustrated when he came out publicly just after completing his stellar college career at the University of Missouri.

It doesn't say whether or not Sam will dance with men on DWtS. And I'm curious about that. I think it's important. One would think he would dance with men. It would make perfect sense.

You can read the rest here.  This is all according to TMZ.

Neil Patrick Harris Mixed Reviews

In full disclosure, I didn't watch the Oscars. They bore me, especially at the middle. But I did follow Twitter while watching Downton Abbey, so I basically knew what was going on during the Oscars. Unfortunately, I missed Neil Patrick Harris in his underwear.

In any event, there were mixed reviews that I don't think can be blamed on NPH. And, this year the Oscars had the lowest ratings in years.

'I'm glad that it's done and I'm sorry that I read Twitter,' said Harris.

Ripa's co-host Michael Strahan asked Harris to compare hosting the Oscars to the Emmys which he has hosted twice and the Tonys which he has hosted four times.

'The Oscars, it's a juggernaut - a gigantic show,' Harris said. 'It's a lot of hurdles and a lot of laps around the track.'

He said one of his goals was to make the live audience inside the theater feel welcome but to also make television viewers feel a part of things as well.

In any event, Lady Gaga stole the entire show when she performed a medley of songs from The Sound of Music. Now if we can only get Julie Andrews to do Bad Romance life will be perfect.

You can read the rest here.  There's also a very excellent feature in this month's Architectural Digest with NPH and his husband, with a photo spread of their Harlem home.Side note: I wanted to move to Harlem fifteen years ago and Tony refused. We could have found something very reasonable at the time.

Gay Sex in the Imitation Game

Well. There is no gay sex in The Imitation Game. I haven't seen this yet, but I will.

Here's why there was no sex:

“It was not because we were afraid it would offend anybody. If I … had this thing about a straight character, I would never have a sex scene to prove that he’s heterosexual. If I have a gay character in a movie, I need to have a sex scene in it — just to prove that he’s gay?”

I’m not shying away from it. His whole relationship, how he falls in love and the importance of him being a gay man, was all about secrecy.

He had some sexual partners, but it was few and far between. The only reason to have a sex scene in the film would be to satisfy critics who feels that every gay character needs to have a gay sex scene.”

I don't totally agree with that. That's NOT the only reason to have a gay sex scene. Sex isn't all about being gay, but it's huge part of it and it's why we are so discriminated against and why religions shun us. They don't hate us because we have good taste in design, they hate us because we suck dick. In this case, it almost sounds as if they're not putting gay sex in on purpose just to prove a point. And I don't think it's a very valid point.

As I said, being gay is NOT all about sex, but sex is a big part of it.  So it serves no point to pretend gay sex doesn't exist...unless, of course, there's a valid reason why the gay character doesn't have sex...a fundamental issue in the plot. And there are reasons. It just doesn't sound as if this one is valid.

You can check this out here.

There's no gay sex in this book of mine, Meadows Are Not Forever. But there's a very good reason for it I can't give you without spoilers.

Guys and First Boyfriends; Regrowing Foreskin, Again; Big Gay Ass

Guys and First Boyfriends

In the article I'm linking to now, guys talk about their experiences with first boyfriends. It's a series of pics with quotes that I guess might be interesting to some people. To be honest, it just looks so cliche to me.

Love is an open door, a battlefield and a losing game. It makes the world go round, makes a world of difference and makes a family.

In short, love’s a bitch, but we love it. And there’s nothing like that first boyfriend, those first kisses, the first time you stay up all night talking with someone.

We teamed up with our pals at Whisper to hear about some “first boyfriend confessions,” because young love is everything mentioned above sprinkled with a little extra crazy.

My only comment is that I had several first boyfriends, and nothing quite as dramatic as these photos imply...or mushy. We parted on good terms, and I always believe that's the best way to end it. But when it's over, it's over. Period.

You can read the rest here. And if you really want to read the most interesting part of this article, skip to the comments. Oh, those wonderful, honest comments.

how do these people get boyfriends in the first place?! I’m 23 and I still have never dated anybody, and yet gays get boyfriends in high school now!? How?!

Regrowing Foreskin, Again

With yet another article on the topic of foreskin, this time it's about how readers responded to a previous article about how scientists are working on a way to regrow foreskin.  This one, again, is all about the comments...and reactions to foreskin and the concept of regrowing it.

Naturally, this sparked quite an outcry. Robertson’s comment received over 20 replies.

“You want to talk about nasty?” David Runyan responded. “Let’s talk about trapping an open wound in a diaper with feces and urine every night. Before you cut your son make a small cut on your thigh, get some used toilet paper, get it moist with some urine and tape it to the cut and leave it over night.”
(Um. We think we’ll pass.)

“My feet get dirty because I walk around barefoot sometimes,”Jeremy Homer added, “but I’m not going to cut them off for the sake of being clean.”

I'm actually fairly neutral on the topic. I don't hate foreskin, I don't love it. It's all about the man attached that matters most to me. Frankly, I would like to think there are so many more important things to research than trying to regrow foreskin.

But this was at least amusing:

To which Cassie Elizabeth Waldeck replied with this pearl of wisdom, “If my circumcised husband doesn’t shower his balls stink. Circumcised men still need to wash their genitals.”

I hope someone thanked her for stating the obvious. The same concept applies to vagina.

You can read the rest here.

Big Gay Ass

For the life of me I'll never get this obsession for a guy with a big HUGE ass. I've always been more attracted to guys with slim hips and more of a V-shape. But this article I'm talking about now is focused on guys with some of the biggest, roundest bubble asses I've ever seen.

There is, however, a redeeming feature that makes it all worth while.

Pygophilia refers to sexual arousal caused by the buttocks (a.k.a. a butt fetish), and is one of the most common fetishes among the human species. Entire songs have been devoted to the subject, including Beyoncé’s “Bootylicious,” J. Lo’s “Booty,” and, of course, Sir Mix-a-Lot’s classic butt anthem “Baby Got Back."

Pygophilia is especially prevalent among gay men. According to the all-knowing Wikipedia, “much of gay male sexuality centers on anal intercourse and penetration, so the buttocks are eroticized in that sector due to their proximity to the anus and the genitals.”

I didn't know about Pygophilia. Bet most people don't know it. So go over and check it out here...with pics of some of the biggest gay ass you ever saw.

Zachary Quinto on "Queerbaiting"; Happily Married Threesome; Meadows Are Not Forever by Ryan Field

Zachary Quinto on "Queerbaiting"

I've been posting about this for a long time but I called it "gaybaiting." Queer or gay, it's still baiting and still means the same thing. It's when "they" bait gay people with gay storylines on TV or films and nothing really ever happens, or when so-called straight white men like James Franco use gay issues and culture to the point of exploitation just to spark the curiosity of gay men so they can gain attention and money. There are other forms, too, and I'm using men this time because I don't see it happen with women...although I'm sure it does.

Zachary Quinto who is gay was recently asked how he feels about "queerbaiting," because he's been involved in some of it himself with a film he was promoting with James Franco.

Zachary Quinto sounded off on the likes of male stars like James Franco and Nick Jonas, who have been criticized for "queerbaiting" their gay fans with steamy photo shoots and same-sex love scenes in movies even though they identify as straight in their offscreen lives.

Quinto, who stars opposite Franco in 2015's "I Am Michael," told HuffPost Live host Josh Zepps that he didn't have an issue with the phenomenon, saying, "These guys who are, in many ways, considered very conventionally desirable, attractive leading men... lending themselves to these kinds of stories is a valuable thing for our culture."

Of course this could also be called exploiting a popular issue for monetary gain, not to mention cultural appropriation. We don't need help with our culture. Our culture is fine as it stands, thank you.

Quinto also went on to discuss other matters for which he's been criticized. You can read the rest here.

The comments are interesting in a sad kind of way, and in some ways they prove how far all LGBT people have to go yet...within the LGBT community. Many just don't get the simple fact that if James Franco or Nick Jonas were to have the audacity to do this with any other minority they would be slammed racist and placed on the same guest list as Paula Deen. Personally, I think it backfires in the long run. A lot of gay people might not realize this is happening right now. But they will.

Happily Married Threesome

This is interesting to me because I've written about long term three-way relationships with gay men, and I've known men in three-way long term relationships personally (I will post in-depth about this someday). In my fiction I've always made a point of stating there would be no legal marriage between a three-way relationship. Not for any strong reason other than that's not how things work in our society and I don't want readers to think I don't know any better.

But here's a story about a three-way relationship where they all got married to each other in Thailand.

These three Thai men, identified only as Joke, Bell and Art, thaied (zing) the three-way knot earlier this week in a traditional Thai water-pouring ceremony.

They shared the following batch of wedding photos, which elicit all sorts of questions. But mostly, the three look happy.

The article also states this was not a legal marriage...for the same reasons I've always made this clear in my books.

Side note: As I stated, I have seen long term three-way relationships. Several. But I have never seen one last more than a few years.

You can read more and see photos here.

Bullies Who Turned Gay; Rage Over Dick Pic; Jamie Dornan's Nude Photos

Bullies Who Turned Gay

Here's an article about people who were homophobic bullies before they realized they were gay. It also discusses how different things were for previous generations of LGBT people, and how differently we grew up from the generation of teens we're seeing right now.

Here's one person's reply:

I mean, I was a young kid, so growing up around other kids in a conservative area (in spite of my pretty liberal parents) I called things I didn’t like “gay,” and people I didn’t like “fags.” I knew being gay meant you were girly and prissy and feminine and deserved to be made fun of.

I didn’t really understand what I was saying, it’s just sort of something you grow up being told about, and you’re told that it’s bad and people who are gay all act a certain way, you know, the typical shit with teenage boys.

You can read the rest here. Frankly, and this might be thanks to my parents, I never did this bullying growing up and I never used homophobic words like that. But I knew people who did.

Rage Over Dick Pic

This is about as Facebook as it gets. A drunk pregnant woman allegedly flew into a rage when she saw her husband looking at a big penis on the computer. The drunk accused him of being gay, punched him, bit him, and threatened him with a knife.

The picture was sent to Scherzo as a joke by a friend of his who happened to be gay. The two men were chatting online. When Hamer saw the photo, prosectors say she “went mad.”

“She started calling him gay and wouldn’t let it go, although he told her it was just a joke,” prosecuting attorney Enza Geldard told a Pennines court this week.

Hamer’s lawyer, Kamran Yousaf, said his client’s behavior was fueled by alcohol and, possibly, pregnancy hormones.

“Clearly, she was aggrieved when she saw that image on the computer and confronted him,” Yousaf said. “She acted wrongly. She shouldn’t have done what she did.”

You can read the rest here. All I'm saying on this topic is that you haven't seen anything until you've seen a jealous berserk woman who thinks a gay man might be stealing her husband away. Or even her boyfriend. It's absolutely vicious and these women react aggressively. I know this because it's happened to me.

Jamie Dornan's Nude Photos

In case you don't know, Jamie Dornan was the lead in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. The film that critics and people with good taste love to hate pushed him into the spotlight almost overnight and now nude photos of him when he was younger have surfaced.

Before he was pretending to be a dom top or a serial killer or a sheriff in a magical land, the rather gorgeous Jamie Dornan was doing what all fresh-faced 21-year-olds dreamed of in the early 2000’s — gracing the pages of the pansexual Abercrombie and Fitch quarterly catalog.

I wouldn't get too excited, though. The nude photos of him are as thrilling as the sex scenes in Fifty Shades of Grey and if you're looking for something interesting you're better off going to Twitter for male nudes.

You can see them here.

Pope Francis, Again; Gays Donating Blood; Openly Gay Cast Member In SNL Not Included; Meadows Are Not Forever

Pope Francis, Again

Many seem to be up in those cliched arms because Pope Francis recently compared transgender people to nuclear weapons.

He said this:

Pope Francis has compared trans people to nuclear weapons, saying both do not 'recognize the order of creation'.

The argument could be made that if transgender people are, indeed, part of the order of creation then the Church and society are more like nuclear weapons than anything else for judging and going against this natural order. The trans people I know did not choose to be trans, they were born that way. If you believe in God, then God created them. No one manipulated them.

He also said this:

'Let's think also of genetic manipulation, of the manipulation of life, or of the gender theory, that does not recognize the order of creation.'

This could also be argued in more than one way. For one thing, if the Pope's argument held truth than fire, the wheel, and penicillin wouldn't have been created. It's all science related, so how do you choose one against the other?

You can read more here about what the Pope says. He also wears a white maxi dress and a matching white hat. With all due respect to the Pope, would you take any advice from a strange elderly bald man on the street wearing the same outfit?

Gays Donating Blood

I've posted about this before...gays donating blood and organs. You can read more about that here.  As you'll see below, it's not a simple matter.

Tony winner Alan Cumming has a big problem with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) blood donor deferral policy for gay and bisexual men.

'If you're gay and you want to save lives, the FDA will let you. You just can't have sex for a year,' Cumming points out in a video released today to raise awareness about the policy.

In a mocking video, Cummings offers suggestions about how to abstain from sex for one year.

The 31 year old ban dates back to the first days of the AIDS crisis, when people were infected because of contaminated blood that had been donated by people with AIDS...without knowing it. Back then no one knew much about AIDS and it took years to figure out the concept of safe sex alone. I was young, but I do remember hearing about it all.

But the FDA wants to replace the policy - enacted during the early days of the AIDS epidemic in the US - with a one-year deferral that would only permit gay and bisexual men to donate blood if they have not had sex with another man in the past year

Many are considering this discrimination, and count me among them. You can read more here.

Openly Gay Cast Member In SNL Not Included

Recently, there was a 40th reunion of Saturday Night Live (SNL) and you would have thought the heavens opened up and God came down from straight heaven if you were on Twitter that night. Twitter is like that whenever there's an award event or something straight people just can't seem to get enough of. Personally, I never watched SNL more than once or twice in my life because of the straight humor. I found myself yawning and the time just didn't pass quickly enough.

In any event, I obviously didn't watch the 40th reunion either so I didn't know about this until just now. It's a form of passive aggressive homophobia I post about often. Evidently, a gay cast member from SNL, Terry Sweeney, wasn't recognized on the reunion show and now there's talk about why.

Sirius XM Radio talk show host Frank DeCaro was among those outraged by what he considered a slight.

'Leaving Terry Sweeney -- the only openly gay male cast member in the forty-year history of Saturday Night Live -- out of the anniversary special doesn't sit well with me,' DeCaro wrote in a Facebook post.

'His Nancy Reagan impression could easily have been included in the political clip montage.'

Up until 2012, Sweeney had been the only openly gay cast member ever on the show...notice I emphasize the word openly here. But this isn't all there is to the story.

According to a 2012 Gawker article entitled He's Not Chevy, He's an Assole: A History of Chevy Chase's Horrific Behavior, Chase suggesting that Sweeney star in a sketch where they weighed him every week to see if he had AIDS.

'So then he ended up having to apologize and actually coming to my office,' Sweeney says in the article. 'He was really furious that he had to apologize to me.'

The one redeeming aspect of this article is that Lorne Michaels of SNL was very supportive of Sweeney during a time when gay people were dealing with all kinds of discrimination because of AIDS. That's called going down on the right side of history.

You can read the rest here.

New Release: Meadows Are Not Forever

I have another new release out today, Meadows Are Not Forever, that's a contemporary gay romance with all classic romance elements. I didn't waver on this one because I wanted it to be a romance. Right now it's up on Smashwords, and I'll post more links when I get them.

Colin Farrell Beat Up Bullies; Freddie Smith Apologizes; First Wives Club Sequel

Colin Farrell Beat Up Bullies

Colin Farrell is a strong supporter of the LGBT community partly because his own brother is gay. But from what I remember he has been a supporter for some time. I watched him play a bisexual in A Home at the End of the World at least a decade ago...a film a highly recommend if you haven't seen it.

In any event, I've seen this all over the gay news:

Colin Farrell used to beat up bullies who attacked his gay brother, his sibling has revealed.

Eamon, the brother of the Hollywood star, said Colin acted as his gay brother's 'protector' in the face of homophobia.

'He acted the part of the big brother. I hate fighting. But he would do that for me,' Eamon told the Irish Independent.

Now that's a nice story. Nothing to complain about there. Take note, James Franco. You might learn something from Colin Farrell. I don't think I've ever seen Farrell gay bait anyone, because real men don't do that to get attention.

You can finished the article here.

Side note: Farrell plays a wonderful part in Saving Mr. Banks in the biopic of P.L. Travers, the woman who wrote Mary Poppins. There is strong evidence Travers was, indeed, a lesbian and that Mary Poppins may have been a lesbian, too.

Freddie Smith Apologizes

I remember posting about this a few months ago and this is the first follow up I've seen. Freddie Smith plays a gay character on a daytime soap and he was in an automobile accident in Ohio where his girlfriend was seriously injured.

On the day an episode aired showing his Days of Our Lives character discovering that his husband has slept with his ex-boyfriend, Smith was in an Ohio courtroom trying to avoid being sent to jail.

He succeeded.

A judge suspended Smith's driver's license for one year and ordered him to DUI school stemming from a car accident last October that left Smith's now fiance seriously injured.

'It was very selfish and I'm very sorry for doing it,' Smith told 19 Action News after the sentencing. 'Today was very nerve-racking and to hear all of the support from fans, friends and family has really helped me stay strong. I appreciate it.'

The rest is here.  There's some interesting information about the gay character he plays. This show I don't follow.

First Wives Club Sequel

Here's an interesting article that claims because the three stars of the movie, The First Wives Club, were women they were treated in a significantly different way than if they had been men. Ultimately, this is the reason why we never saw a sequel to the film.

We were all women of a certain age, and everyone took a cut in salary to do it so the studio could make what it needed. We all took a smaller back end than usual and a much smaller front end. And we ended up doing incredibly well. The movie was hugely successful. It made a lot of money. We were on the cover of Time magazine. But two years later, when the studio came back with a sequel, they wanted to offer us exactly the same deal. We went back to ground zero. Had three men come in there, they would have upped their salaries without even thinking about it. But the fear of women’s movies is embedded in the culture.”

I read the book, The First Wives Club, and loved it. But to be honest I wasn't a huge fan of the film simply because it came off as being so painfully cliche. I've also been known to get hives and stomach cramps watching any Bette Midler film for more than ten minutes.

The article is here.

As one person in the comments said:

Honestly, though I’m all about empowered women, I thought this movie sucked.

Bobby Cannavale Soft Porn; Davey Wavey Measures His Penis; 8 Stupid Things About Being Gay

Bobby Cannavale Soft Porn

I'm a fan of Bobby Cannavale, and was long before he did the male full frontal nude scene in Boardwalk Empire. In fact, I stopped watching Boardwalk Empire after they killed off his character. It was a good series of fiction wrapped around real life, but in the end they kept killing off the characters I loved the most, which frustrated me. And the big problem was they didn't introduce new characters that could compete with the old.

In any event, here's a link to information about a film with Bobby Cannavale that was based on the life of Linda Lovelace. The title is Lovelace, and oddly enough our good gay baiting buddy, James Franco, was up for the lead but didn't get it.

Lovelace is a 2013 American biographical drama film about porn actress Linda Boreman, better known as Linda Lovelace. It covers the part of her life when she was "20 to 32".[8] Directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, the film was written by Andy Bellin and stars Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, Sharon Stone, Adam Brody, and Juno Temple. The film had its world premiere on January 22, 2013, at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and opened in a U.S. limited release on August 9, 2013.

You can check that out here. It's a great film and Cannavale plays an interesting part.

Davey Wavey Measures His Penis

This one is a little old, but it's kind of amusing. I saw it last night and I don't remember posting about it at the time. Davey Wavey and Pornster, Jake Bass, did this online inches deal and measured their dicks. Davey Wavey claims normal is 5 1/4 inches while Bass says it's 7 inches. I'm more inclined to agree with Davey, at least from my experience.

In any event:

But at least there’s one thing these boys can agree on: Most men don’t know how to measure their dicks at all, regardless of their size. That’s why they’re offering a handy tutorial on how to measure your dick in “online inches,” which basically amounts to doubling whatever measurement you’ve taken.

Sounds kind of like something people do for Grindr to get dates or hook up.

You can watch the video here.

The comments won't surprise you.

8 Questionable Things About Being Gay

Here's another article written about gay men that could be questioned by gay men who don't fit the description. I don't even like to post about these things anymore, but I do it so that somewhere, somehow, someone might "get" it. In this case the real title of the piece is Here Are Eight Great Things About Being Gay.

In one section he posts gay men can't get pregnant...stating the obvious.

This could be questioned:

8. Gay bars

Face it, gay bars are superior to straight bars. The music is more fun, the drinks are more potent, and the people are in better shape (except for maybe at bear bars), not to mention better dressed (ditto). Most importantly, there’s not that awful denigration towards women you see at douchebag straight bars. Sure, we oogle each other, but no one feels subjugated (unless, of course, they want to).

He not only implies all gay men go to gay bars, he insults straight people, too. Not to mention the fact that gay bars are, and have been, closing down little by little all over the US thanks to hook up apps and lifestyle changes.

How about this one:

6. Open relationships

While there are certainly plenty of gay couples who practice monogamy, open relationships are much more common (or at least commonly discussed) among gay couples than among straight ones. And, no, that doesn’t mean the gay guys in said relationships are sluts (unless they want to be) or that they aren’t still deeply committed to one another. It just means they’re able to separate NSA sex from real love, and they know how to appreciate both simultaneously without all the petty drama.

Maybe this is sarcasm I'm not getting?

I could continue to dispute every word this guy writes, but it's not worth it. The rest of the mess is here.

This comes from the comment thread and I think this guy is the one who really speaks for many of  us:

Wow. 8 shallow, ridiculous points. Are we really that plastic?

And anyone can dress well or dress poorly. I’m gay. I don’t dress in expensive clothes… I sometimes find nice stuff to wear, but I also have my style (considering urban).

And gay bars aren’t all that great from my experience. Some gay clubs are good in Los Angeles (Arena+Circus for one… but they are said to be shutting their doors this year).

And there you go. This isn't just me questioning all these things. There are millions of gay men all over the world who are getting tired of this kind of stereotypical article filled with inaccuracy and misinformation.

Sorry If I Don't Cry; Michael Sam's First Time; Dad Stabs Alleged Trans; Gay Leather Park San Francisco

Sorry If I Don't Cry

Let me set this up by mentioning a little about my own background. I began working toward a writing career in high school. I majored in English in college and I started submitting short stories to anthologies before I even graduated. Over the course of twenty years (plus) I never once said no to a job, no matter how small, no matter how little it paid, and no matter far down on the publishing chain it fell. I never once said no, and still don't. Why? Because I only wanted to write. It's not about being an author; it's about being a writer. I'll stop here, without mentioning the rejection I have had and still deal with on a daily basis. I'm really not complaining; I love what I do.

With that said, I've noticed this seems to be the year that many authors who were part of the e-book boom have decided to call it quits. Now that e-book sales have leveled off and the e-reader hype is coming to an end, authors who became "writers" because it looked like something fun to do seem to be tiring fast and moving on to other venues. There's nothing wrong with that. I tell myself at least once a week I'm chucking it all and opening that gourmet cheese shop I always wanted to own. We all make choices and we all have to do what is right for us.

However, you'll have to pardon me if I don't sit and cry the blues with you when you decide to give up your "writing career," especially those of you who've been writing for about three days. I'll sit and cry with my mom who has bile duct cancer, has had Whipple surgery this year, and has been doing chemo since September. I'll sit and cry with my good friend who just lost her husband to cancer. I'll even sit and cry with a friend who just had to put her dog down. But there's no way in hell I'm going to sit and cry with a disillusioned wannabe writer because things didn't go the way he or she wanted.

Get over yourself. Not everyone is going to be E. L. James and become rich and famous overnight with fan fiction...not everyone wants to be her either. There is nothing easy about writing and publishing and there never was, not in the twenty plus years I've been around. It's filled with rejection and frustration. For every two people who support you there are ten who don't. So you either buck up and continue, or you fade quietly into the proverbial sunset. I'll wish you the best, I'll encourage you when you're down, but I'm not crying with you. There just isn't enough time for that.

Michael Sam's First Time

After being with a man for the first time, Michael Sam claims he knew he was gay. Don't think that's unusual. Not every gay man wants to admit this until there's some kind of epiphany. Sam also gives credit to his fiance for giving him the courage to come out in public.

'Vito has been with me for a long time and actually it is because of Vito that I am here tonight to talk to you guys,' he said.

'He is the only one who made me comfortable to be who I am; to be comfortable in my own skin. And without him, this would never be possible. I owe him everything.'

Sam proposed to his college boyfriend at the Vatican in December.

The footballer said that he knew he was 'different' growing up but he did not know as gay.

'I didn't know I was gay, I just knew I was different. But I always knew I had football. So, I was like, you know, when I go to college I will experiment. I will see if – maybe, I'm not gay. Maybe, it's a phase,' he said

It's interesting to note that most gay men feel this way. I did. It's a phase, it will pass, there's nothing wrong. But it doesn't pass and sooner or later you have to face it. And once again, I've met a lot of gay men who are in the closet and very unhappy, but I've never met one who came out and said he was sorry he did it.

Frankly, I think this just adds more to Michael Sam's hero appeal.

You can read the rest here.

Dad Stabs Alleged Trans

In what appears to be the stabbing death of a 22 year old trans woman, the alleged trans woman's father has been charged.

Bri Golec, an artist and drummer from Akron, Ohio, is the seventh known trans person to murdered this year.

The Golec family say Bri was actually Brian, a man, and was not trans. (Note, our policy is not to use previous names for trans people but in respect for the grieving family's wishes and the fact the identity can not be confirmed beyond all doubt, we are including this reference.)

Police charged Kevin Golec, 52, with murder and domestic violence and is being held at the Summit County Jail.

It gets more complicated with allegations about the victim being part of a pagan cult and the father acting in self-defense. Nothing in this article seems to be concrete at this point. In fact, nothing can be confirmed, not even whether or not the victim was actually a transgender person.

You can read more here. The article also has an update:

UPDATE: The language in this report has been updated to reflect family members' clear statement that Golec was male and not a trans woman. We continue to note, as we did before, that Golec's gender identity can not be 100% confirmed based on conflicting evidence currently available.

Gay Leather Park San Francisco

I have to admit that as a gay man I've never identified with leather or BDSM. But it is part of gay culture and people are trying to keep this alive. In this case, they're planning a gay leather park in San Francisco.

The developed public space, currently taken up by a car park, would be transformed into a leather-themed pedestrian plaza under the new proposals.
'I am super excited about it. I think it is beautiful,' said one supporter of the proposals, as quoted by the Bay Area Reporter.
Eagle Plaza, as is it would be called, would fall within an area already designated by the city as an LGBTI cultural heritage district.

I think this might be the beginning of more things like this to come.

Steve Grand Album; Rabbi Responds to Huckabee Statements; Madonna's Bare Ass

Steve Grand Album

Since I last posted about Steve Grand I've been following him on Twitter and I've watched how he interacts so personally with fans and supporters. I make that distinction because I've never been into fandom, but I do have artists I support wholeheartedly. I think there's a difference.

In any event, this article talks about Steve Grand's new album, the one many of us have been waiting for since Grand made that ground-breaking video a few years ago where he sings about unrequited gay love.

It's part of a look back at news stories from the week, but it's nice video.

Out Musician Steve Grand Dishes On Upcoming 'All American Boy' Album Out singer-songwriter Steve Grand, who shot to viral fame in 2013 with the smash single "All-American Boy," will release his hotly-anticipated debut album on March

You can view it here

Rabbi Responds to Huckabee Statement

I posted about a few unreal statements made by Mike Huckabee a few weeks ago, one of which is where he basically compared gays to eating kosher food. And now, thankfully, a rabbi has responded to these statements.

Rabbi Responds To Huckabee's Ridiculous 'Bacon Wrapped Shrimp' Comments Rabbi Menachem Creditor joins HuffPost Live to talk about Mike Huckabee's "bacon wrapped shrimp" comments.

It's a video and you can see it here.

To be honest, it's pro gay marriage, but it gets into a lot of religious nonsense I never had time for...with any organized religion. It's interesting and I think he comes from a good place. But you've been warned...can he talk.

Madonna's Bare Ass

Evidently, Madonna has been getting hate from ageists and she's flipping them all the bird. A lot of this comes from her showing off her big bare ass on the red carpet and people have been talking about that bare ass because it's 56 years old.

That’s right. Madonna is well aware of all the ageist haters out there who like to criticize her for being 56 and still daring to flash her derrière on the red carpet. And guess what? She doesn’t care what you think about her. Because, bitch, she’s Madonna.

Then it talks about Madonna using the word "bitch." This is really rich:

I’m not interested in political correctness. The word “bitch” means a lot of different things. Everything is about context. … If I say to you, “I’m a badass bitch,” I’m owning myself, I’m saying, “I’m strong, I’m tough, and don’t mess with me.” If I say, “Why are you being such a bitch to me?,” well, that means something else.

So just to get this right: Madonna wants everyone to be PC about flashing her 56 year old bare ass on the red carpet, but in the same respect she isn't too PC and she doesn't mind using the word bitch. In fact, she's fucking proud of it.

The one thing not mentioned is whether or not any bare ass at any age should be flashed on the red carpet, because some people might think that's kinda dumb. But Madonna seems to be all about the ass.

I only have one comment. You don't see Steve Grand flashing his adorable bare ass on the red carpet.

You can read more here about Madonna's opinions, feelings, and how she thinks. It's very thrilling...could change your life, said no one ever.

Poll Supports Gay Marriage; Ricky Martin and Social Media; 10 Hot Gay Bachelors

Poll Supports Gay Marriage

I've been following these polls for a while out of curiosity. As the fight for equality progresses and more LGBT people are coming out, marrying, and focusing on family life, the mainstream is becoming more and more supportive in ways I honestly didn't think I would ever see in my lifetime.

According to the report issued by the largest gay civil rights group in the country '60% of likely voters support marriage equality, a new high point.'

'This poll is another conclusive sign that support for marriage equality and LGBT people overall continues to grow,' Fred Sainz, the organization's vice president for communications, said in a statement.

The study also shows nearly half of Americans know an LGBTI couple who has been married.

What I'm hoping this will do is silence the most aggressive bigots the same way they were silenced during the civil rights movement. When it became apparent that discriminating against African Americans was, indeed, wrong the bigots withdrew, and some even changed their opinions.

And there will be a day when no one in the mainstream doesn't at least know someone who is openly gay and married.

You can read the rest here.

Ricky Martin and Social Media

In this article, Ricky Martin talks about his addiction to social media. From what I gather...I don't follow him, but I will...he's candid about everything in his life, with nothing to hide.

'I laugh so much at the reaction of the people; it's so funny. It really is amazing,' he tells PrideSource.

What led to his selfie habit?

'I just want to let people know how normal my life is, and I try to do it with a simple picture - that's what Instagram is about. ... The other day I was laying in the sun and I was like, "Hey everyone, I'm here. I'm in a good place."'

It's all a part of his being 'a little bit obsessed with social media.'

I'll admit I'm obsessed with social media, too. This winter has been so brutal I'm forced to use a treadmill in the house and I'm on twitter and facebook just to pass the time. It's interaction, and being a writer we don't get that daily interaction we crave so much.

You can read the rest here. Y'all who look at social media with such disdain really don't know what you're missing, especially if you're a writer. I honestly don't know how it's possible for a writer or an agent NOT to be part of some kind of social media today and still remain relevant.

10 Hot Gay Bachelors

Here's something I found interesting from a writer's perspective...the word bachelor seems to have taken on a new life now that more gay men are coming out and gaining equal rights. In the past, the word bachelor typically meant single unmarried straight man...sometimes with a hidden meaning of gay...and now there are actually gay bachelors because gay people can get legally married. I think that's huge.

In any event, here's list of the 10 hottest gay bachelors in the public eye. I'm sure there are plenty not in the public eye, too.

 1. Jonathan Groff Reportedly single since his break-up with Zachery Qunito, gorgeous Jonathan Groff – star of HBO gay drama Looking – is one of the world's most in-demand gay actors. What's more, the 29-year-old (who has also lent his talents to films such as Frozen and shows such as Glee) was recently grilled on his dating habits, and what turns him on and off about guys – and his answers were more than little revealing. Groff admitted he 'absolutely' likes sex on a first date, is turned on by guys who are hairy and balding, and only like's guys who are versatile. Form an orderly queue, boys…

I'm just so glad I'm married and don't have to go through THIS anymore...knock wood.

Rainbow Detective Agency Book 2; Fifty Shades of Grey Not So Gay; Southern States and STDs

Rainbow Detective Agency Book 2

Here's the second book in the The Rainbow Detective Agency Series. It was released late Friday and I didn't want to post anything until it went live. I still don't have all the links, but will share as I get each one.

The book is a stand alone, and this time, with this series, I'm labeling each book in sequence so readers know the order in which they were written. Here's the cover, blurb, and links. You can read a sample at each web site, and I will do a free sample from the middle of the book soon.

In this second installment of The Rainbow Detective Agency, gay private detectives, Proctor Gamble and Blair Huntingdon, have settled into a routine that seems to work for them. Although they are still arguing, they are also still making love and their relationship is always moving forward.

When they meet Alonzo Albertini, an attractive young man from Tuscany who claims to be an Italian fairy with magical powers, Proctor refuses to take him as a client. He thinks Alonzo is unstable and it would be unethical. But Blair argues the point that they shouldn’t judge Alonzo and he insists on taking the case anyway.

Proctor finally agrees and they wind up getting involved in a dangerous situation that involves a dead body, a rare priceless chalice that was allegedly stolen from the Vatican, and a client who believes he’s being chased by an old order of evil magicians. Along the way, they experience a few interesting erotic events, one of which happens in a bathhouse with four hot young men.

But is there really something magical about Alonzo, and will Proctor and Blair be able to help keep him from harm? Or for that matter, will Proctor and Blair figure out a way to solve the case and overcome the stress it puts on their relationship?

Fifty Shades of Grey Not so Gay

I've posted a few times this week about ridiculous advertorials the people promoting the film, Fifty Shades of Grey, have been placing in gay publications in order to nab the gay audience in very shabby passive aggressive homophobic ways. Well, here's an article I do agree with because it shows not only how Fifty Shades of Grey wouldn't work with gay characters, but also how the entire BDSM theme of the book is way off target all the way around. In fact, it's so way off target I've never met a person into the BDSM lifetstyle that supports or straight.

In any event, this is true, and from what I gather the same thing applies to straight people into BDSM:

In 50 Shades, Christian Grey’s penchant for being a total dom is chalked up to an abusive childhood. Once he has Ana, he eventually realizes he doesn’t need that dynamic to satisfy him any longer. Makes for a good story, sure. But in the gay world, even kinky sex isn’t always so serious. Sure, we’ve got daddy issues just like anyone else, but sometimes sex is just sex. We tend to not get so heady about it.

It's a good article, it's short and sweet, and it shows how there is little to the book or movie that is in any way related to gay culture. You can read it in full here.

Southern States and STDs

According to this article, southern states like Louisiana have the highest STD rates. Actually, I did some grad work once for about six months in Spartanburg, SC, and I remember there being a high STD rate at the time, too. Of course in my case it was hearsay, but I do remember being extremely careful and not taking anything for granted.

In fact, the South is leading the nation in new cases sexually transmitted diseases, according to the report, which is based on 2013 numbers. Eight of the 11 states with the highest rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis were located in the Southeast. (The CDC didn’t include new stats for HIV/AIDS.) Researchers believe bans on comprehensive sex education plus lack of funding for STD testing are fueling the southern dominance of new infections.

Close to 20 million new infections are reported in the U.S. every year. But that’s only a tiny fraction of existing cases. The actual number is probably closer to 110 million. Many people (90 million to be precise) either don’t realize they’re infected or don’t seek medical help.

Here's the rest of the article.
