Terrified Ugandans Seek Safety From New Anti-Gay Law, Ryan Field Books

Terrified Ugandans Seek Safety From New Anti-Gay Law

On the global front, it's not getting any better for gay people in the backward country of Uganda. They are calling a new proposed law the anti-gay bill of 2023.

Although it sill has not been sent to the President, it did pass in Parliament. According to this, the US has been urging him not to sign.

And LGBTQ people are terrified.

"They are going to arrest us because I cannot pretend to be what I am not," said Alex, a gay man in Uganda, where MPs last week passed what has been criticised as among the world's harshest anti-gay legislation.

Here's more. Anyone who has gay sex can be sent to prison for life. And repeat offenders could be sentenced to death. If you read more, you'll see that this isn't the first time Uganda has gone after gay people.

Now tell me how wonderful Africa is. I'm waiting.

The Death of Gay Bars, Ryan Field Books

 The Death of Gay Bars

At one time, there was a book titled, The Gay Yellow Pages. It was kind of a guide to being gay. The contents of this book was like gold for gay men. It listed every single gay venue, including gay bars. It wasn't easy to get this book either. I used to drive into Manhattan from New Jersey and buy it at a small news shop in The Village at the corner of 7th Ave. South and Christopher Street. But it was well worth the trip. I found many wonderful bars thanks to that book, including the bars I frequented in New Hope, PA.

With that said, we needed a book like this because it was the only way to meet other gay men. Nowadays, thanks to the Internet, hook up apps, and a general acceptance of gay men, we don't need books like this anymore. And in turn, this has been killing gay bars. One by one, they continue to shutter and close because no one goes there anymore. In many cases they've become venues for straight women to have bridal showers...which gay men despise.

This article to which I'm linking right now talks about the upside of the gay bars closing, from having fewer drug addictions to alcoholism. There was a lot of drugs and booze in those bars. There used to be a bar in New Hope were they would charge 2 dollars for cover just to get in, and you would get two tickets for two free drinks. After that, you bought your own. But very few ever left that bar sober.

According to Andrew G. Marshall, a London Therapist, here's one possible reason there was so much partying happening in gay bars.

“Alcohol and drugs help facilitate sex in the gay world and make it easier. They quiet down the fears of not being good enough, not having the right body, not fitting in. These fears are quieted in a way that people who haven’t received that amount of shame don’t need.”

Here's more. This is where I have a problem. I don't totally agree with this. I'm not saying it's completely wrong, but I do remember it being quite different in the hey days. We partied and danced because we were having fun. Sex was not always the big draw for us. We were NOT worried about shame when we were in a gay bar. We felt free and relaxed and we drank and did poppers and did whatever we could to savor those moments. And it's kind of sad to realize there is now a whole generation of gay men who'll never know about this. Not to mention the fact that we seem to be entering another Victorian Age.

The Fresh Hells and Horrors of Being Gay In Africa, Ryan Field Books

The Fresh Hells and Horrors of Being Gay In Africa

This is why I get annoyed with my straight gay allies who claim to care about gay men. They go to places like Uganda and never think twice about what is happening to gay men over there.

Uganda's parliament recently passed one of the strictest laws against gay men. In short, if anyone there says they identify as gay, they could wind up in prison.

There are also secret shelters for gay men who've been kicked out of their homes, and these shelters are now under attack.

"My father said: 'I never want to see you again. You're not my child. I can't have a child like you,' says Ali, whose name has been changed to protect his identity.

Here's more. It doesn't get better in these awful backward countries in Africa. This new bill they are trying to pass is one of the worst ever.

San Francisco's Gay Soft Ball League Celebrates 50 Years, Ryan Field Books

San Francisco's Gay Soft Ball League Celebrates 50 Years

Ever since gay men have been caught up in the LGBTQ plus acronym we've had our own culture ignored and minimalized for the good of everyone else who allegedly falls under the "umbrella" of LGBTQ Plus. The problem is that we are not asexual and we can't identify with asexuals. We're not trans people and we can't identify with trans people. So it's nice to see a story that not only celebrates gay men, but also gay history.

It's been 50 years since the Gay Softball League in SF started as a place for gay men to gather, to feel safe, and to learn more about themselves in a world that often shamed them. I'm sure when it first started 50 years ago the world was a very different place. I wouldn't have been writing this post back then. If I had been around back then I would have been living a very different gay life. But thanks to these gay men of this generation, we are all little more liberated and free to be authentic.

I take things like this very seriously. One of the pitchers, Russ Smith, talks about what it was like in the 1980s when Reagan was ignoring gay men and AIDS.

“Most of the teams here were sponsored by a bar,” he recalled, “So you’d go to the losing team’s bar first and then everybody would go to the winning team’s bar and you bought each other rounds. So it was really a good social thing and the 80’s [otherwise] weren’t the most pleasant time.”

Here's more. I do remember when Gay men had to be creative in order to meet other gay men. Some found cruise spots and others met at bars or gay venues designed just for gay men. Back in the days when straight women didn't have baby showers and wedding showers in gay bars.

And for those of you who don't believe we have our own history and culture, this article a just more proof.

Things He Learned On His First Gay Cruise, Ryan Field Books

Things He Learned On His First Gay Cruise

I remember when gay cruises started to gain popularity back in the 90s. I wasn't a fan of them then, and I'm still not a fan of them now. Just the idea of being stuck on a ship for days with people I may or may not like conjures images of hell. And from the looks of the photo at this link it looks even worse. Just they way they are all dressed makes me not want to go.

With that said, there are some who love gay cruises. And this article is about 11 things someone learned about gay cruises.

One thing this article proves is how diverse gay men can be. There is not one single thing about a gay cruise that makes me want to go. This guy wound up with Norovirus.

The self-contained, high-traffic nature of a cruise ship makes it susceptible to outbreaks, and on a gay cruise, frequent incidences of person-to-person contact can increase your chances of getting sick.

Here's the rest.  Even if  I just look at the photos I lose interest in gay cruises. And frankly, I didn't know they were making such a huge comeback. The one thing I don't get is they claim gay cruises are more expensive than other cruises because there are drag shows. The other thing I don't like is the way he keeps referring to gay men as queer. I identify as gay, not queer.

In Spite of DeSantis, Disney World Will Hold a Major Summit on Gay Rights, Ryan Field Books

In Spite of DeSantis, Disney World Will Hold a Major Summit on Gay Rights

I never thought I would have to see the day we would be revisiting these topics and issues, but along comes a homophobic man like DeSantis and there's a need to do this all over again. DeSantis has set us back 50 years, back to the days when don't say gay was normal in schools...and mostly everywhere...and back to the days when TV shows like MASH made jokes about us with characters like Klinger. Even in the 80s and 90s we didn't openly discuss being gay for fear of backlash and shame.

Then suddenly all that started to change and as younger people started coming out, with pride, and gay marriage became a reality, the shame and stigma started to disappear. But DeSantis has been trying to attack and push us all back 50 years, to a time when high school kids feared being gay and couldn't speak about it openly. It was our own self-imposed silence. So if DeSantis thinks he's doing something new, he should look a little deeper into our history.

But we're not going to take it lying down. Disney is now reaching out with a gay rights summit in retaliation of what DeSantis has been doing.

It's being promoted as the largest conference in the world.

Out & Equal says its summit “is the largest LGBTQ+ conference in the world,” bringing executives, employee resource group leaders, human resource professionals and experts in diversity, equity and inclusion together to promote equality.

Here's more. DeSantis is expected to run against Trump in 2024. So just remember one thing, all you Trump haters. I'm not a Trump fan myself. However, right now, so far, think about what DeSantis has been doing with his don't say gay laws. It's exactly what Putin did in Russia with his gay propaganda law. Think about that very seriously.
