New Zealand's Rugby Player Campbell Johnstone Comes Out As Gay, Ryan Field Books

New Zealand's Rugby Player Campbell Johnstone Comes Out As Gay

I'm always saying that there are millions of gay people still in the closet and here is one more example.

Famous New Zealand rugby player, Campbell Johnstone, recently came out as gay after being in the closet for years. He's hoping to take away the pressure and the stigma, and thankfully he's right about that. For millions, there is still stigma and shame associated with being gay, and some never do come out.

“But if I open up that door and kind of magically make that closet disappear then we’re going to help a lot of people,” he added.

Here's more. I totally understand why some gay men don't want to come out, however, I wish they would reconsider and be more like Campbell Johnstone. It only makes it better for us and for future generations of gay men. And it makes anti-gay people like the Governor of Florida think twice, too. We are not going to disappear no matter what these MAGA Christians think.

In many ways we are just beginning to realize our own equal rights and that we are just as marginalized as any other minority. There are many gay men out there who still don't want to face this, even those who are out of the closet.

“A wonderful story that I loved. The characters were well developed and strong. Gus: A sweet young man. Doing something for all the wrong reasons. Craig: his boyfriend, he’ll go along with anything Gus say. Henry: Gus father a no-nonsense man, who’s husband died last year. I enjoyed this story.”

The Way We Almost Were and its Unsoliciated Reviews, Ryan Field Books

The Way We Almost Were and its Unsolicited Reviews

I don't often post about my own books in so much detail, especially not the reviews. I have always believed, in the last almost 30 years writing, that reviews are for the reviewer and not the author.

With that said, authors need reviews and the unsolicited kind are the most valuable. In most cases, these reviews are the most honest and the ones we need. And it doesn't matter about whether or not they are raving reviews or bad reviews. As long as someone took the time to review our book is all that matters. Besides, the bad reviews are so subjective sometimes it often leads readers to buy the book anyway.

The other day I was looking through a few of my books and I was curious about the reviews. I found one that surprised me. I had never even read the reviews for this book. I didn't even know people had left reviews.

The book's title is The Way We Almost Were, and I was asked to write this one by a digital romance publisher who has since gone out of business. Even though it is supposed to be a parody, I didn't want to write it because I was never a fan of the movie, The Way We Were. But at the time I was contracted to do it, and I was getting advances for these books. So against my own better judgment I did it, and then I forgot all about it.

However, in hindsight I'm glad I did it. I never expected anything like this. Here's the link to Amazon.

I'm only posting part of the reviews, not all. But I thank each person from the bottom of my heart who left a review.

I've read the majority of this author's work. His stories are romantic and fun. He has the ability to make you "see" the story unfold.

If the author, Ryan Field reads this review I want him to know that this is definitely a book that deserves a sequel because I suspect there is much more to Mickey then meets the eye!

Why Effeminate Men Have It So Rough, Ryan Field Books

Why Effeminate Men Have It So Rough

Here's an article to which I'm linking that discusses effeminate gay men, and why they always have it so difficult, especially in the workplace.

And a good deal if this has to do with masculine bias. I see it on social media all the time, especially on Twitter. Some of these conservative quasi masculine gay men who follow the "LGB" movement are vicious toward effeminate gay men. But it can come from all directions

And it's straight men, too. Both masculine gay and straight men prefer other masculine men in leadership roles in the workplace.

They did a study about this and here's a quote from the study's lead author, Ben Gerrard.

“In society there is a strong association between gayness and femininity and many gay men grow up with an unconscious idea that gayness is bad, so they may consciously or unconsciously suppress feminine traits.”

Here's more. In the gay world there is another term for this and I have heard it all my life. It's call "self-loathing." And unfortunately, we often eat our own.

The Last of Us' Gay Love Story, Ryan Field Books

The Last of Us' Gay Love Story

I know absolutely nothing about The Last of Us. I don't know anything about it being a gay love story either. They called Call Me by Your Name a gay love story and it was nothing of the kind. With a simple search I found out it's an apocalyptic drama on HBO.

And yet, here is something well-acted and solidly-told. Finally, most importantly, it is a romance between two men, Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett).

Here's more. Nick Offerman is not gay in real life. He's playing gayface. However, Murray Bartlett is gay. So they got it half right and I do support Murray Bartlett. I've loved watching him in other things.

But I probably won't be seeing this. They are calling for the straight actor, Offerman, to win an Emmy and I have seen just about enough straights win awards for playing gayface as I can take for one lifetime. Hollywood never seems to "get" this. Don't tell me it's "just acting." If that were the case we would see white actors playing blackface, and we all know how wrong that would be. You never appropriate the minority. Never.

I have never once seen a gay actor like Rock Hudson win an award for playing a straight. And that takes acting skills.

The Way We Were's Secret Gay Back Story, Ryan Field Books

The Way We Were's Secret Gay Back Story

When my publisher, at the time, asked me to write a book titled The Way We Almost Were, as a gay parody of the hetero film, The Way We Were, I had no idea about any of this gay back story. My book is simply the gay version with a great deal of parody and camp. Oddly, I got some good reviews for this one...totally unexpected. But I'm truly thankful.

In any event,  I'm learning all this for the first time, too.

The Way We Almost Were

There's a book out titled, The Way They Were: How Epic Battles and Bruised Egos Brought a Classic Hollywood Love Story to the Screen. It was written by an entertainment journalist named Robert Hoffler who was always fascinated by the movie.

“I find it just bizarre in this day and age,” Hofler says. So he set out to thoroughly explore the gay angle of The Way We Were. “There always has to be a gay angle, or I’m not interested,” says Hofler, a gay man.

Here's the rest.  It gets into a great deal more about the back story that I found fascinating.

Man Sentenced to 45 Years in Prison For Targeting a Gay Man on a Hook Up App, Ryan Field Books

Man Sentenced to 45 Years in Prison For Targeting a Gay Man on a Hook Up App

For those of you who use hook up apps all the time, you might want to pay attention closely this time. A man from Louisiana was recently  sentenced to 45 years in jail for kidnapping and trying to murder a gay man. Apparently, this was in the making for months. He also targeted other gay men.

“The facts of this case are truly shocking, and the defendant’s decision to specifically target gay men is a disturbing reminder of the unique prejudices and dangers facing the LGBTQ+ community today,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

Here's more. The article goes on to mention that Grindr was the app this guy used to target gay men. He became obsessed with killing gay men in a  cannibalistic  Jeffrey Dahmer way. They also get into civil rights and hate crimes.

But if you're a gay man and you're out there using hook up apps like Grindr, be prudent. This sort of thing can happen to anyone.

Pope Clarifies Gay Sex and Sin in a Note, Ryan Field Books

Pope Clarifies Gay Sex and Sin in a Note

Whenever I see the word "homosexuality" lately I cringe. Being gay is not just about sex or sexuality. That's an old term that was used to describe us back when they didn't know what else to say. Now I prefer gay or even queer. And I wish the straight media would stop using that awful word.

With that said, the other day I posted about the Pope making a statement where he did not believe being gay was a crime, but he did say it was a sin. And now he's clarifying what he said about sin. And it kind of makes sense to me because I grew up Catholic and I've heard this before.

“When I said it is a sin, I was simply referring to Catholic moral teaching, which says that every sexual act outside of marriage is a sin,” Francis wrote in Spanish, underlining the final phrase.

Here's more. I have to admit that I'm glad the Pope is calling for decriminalization of gay people all over the world. There are some countries in the Middle East and Africa that treat us in the worst possible ways.
