UK Home Office and Failure To Erase Convictions For Gay Sex; Pete Buttigieg's Mom Shares His Childhood Pics; Ryan Field Books

UK Home Office and Failure To Erase Convictions For Gay Sex

Here's a piece where the focus is on what used to happen to gay men in the UK if they had consensual sex. They were treated as if they were criminals, and shamed and humiliated for doing what was completely natural. In short, they did nothing wrong but that didn't matter. They were arrested and convicted for being gay men.

In 2012, after years of fear and persecution and degradation, a bill called Protection of Freedoms promised to delete these horrendous convictions for consensual gay sex. However, according to this article it still hasn't been fully executed.

A Freedom of Information request submitted by The Guardian revealed that fewer than 200 of these wrongful convictions have been officially erased since the scheme was introduced seven years ago – a failure rate of 71 percent.

Here's the link. I highly suggest reading this one.

Pete Buttigieg's Mom Shares His Adorable Childhood Pics

This story is much lighter, and much more positive. Pete Buttigieg's mom has decided to share Pete's childhood photos with the world and people can't seem to get enough.

Anne...Pete's supportive also asking people to donate money to his campaign. And rightly so. These campaign contributions can either make or break a candidate. It's very important.

She then goes on to share a couple of photos of Pete as a young boy, recounting how careful he has always been with his dollars.

The photos are adorable, and the article goes on to give some basic facts and back story about Pete and what he's doing right now. There's a video of Anne, too.

Here's the link.  You'll want to see this one. I'd like to see him move forward in this race. I've seen people comment that they like Pete but they don't like his husband. But that doesn't make any sense to me at all. When people voted for Harry Truman they didn't get Bess Truman as their President. They got Harry. So let's keep that distinction clear.

Downton Abbey's Rob James-Collier Thinks Playing Gay Face Hurt His Career; A Gay Sugar Daddy and Sugar Baby Arrangement; The Downton Abbey Movie's Gay Story Line; Ryan Field Books

Downton Abbey's Rob James-Collier Thinks Playing Gay Face Hurt His Career

Here's another interesting story about a straight actor who played gay face on Downton Abbey recently.

This is what Rob Jame-Collier is saying now about playing gay face...

He said: “Because Thomas Barrow is gay and is, essentially, the bad guy for much of the show, a lot of people within the industry can only see you as that. They might not be in a rush to see you as a heterosexual love interest. That takes time.”

Here's the rest.   Tell that to all the openly gay actors out there who can't get any parts, gay or straight.

Here's another link from Out Magazine. The quote below pretty much sums up my opinion.

Excuse us if we don’t exactly emphasize with a straight, cis actor complaining about how playing gay hurt his burgeoning Hollywood career two years after saying the playing a gay character was a "privilege."

A Gay Sugar Daddy and Sugar Baby Arrangement

I do find these stories fascinating for some reason. I'm not even sure why. This time it's about a Sugar Daddy who's allegedly scamming a Sugar Baby. And remember, this is all from Reddit.

One guy’s story of being invited into a sugar daddy/baby arrangement has Redditors horrified — and for good reason.

Here's a link to more. Wait until you read about what the Sugar Daddy wants this guy to do.

The Downton Abbey Movie's Gay Story Line

I have to admit that I don't plan to see the Downton Abbey feature film in theaters. I didn't like the way the gay character was handled during the series...for many reasons. It does, however, sound as if things have improved slightly.

Thomas Barrow, Downton Abbey‘s valet-turned-butler, whose dark journey during the series saw him take some wrenching steps to try and “cure” himself of homosexuality, received a much more hopeful treatment in the new feature film of the same name.

Gay TV Reality Chef Gets Hate Mail; Don’t Tell Mayor Pete How To Be Gay; Ryan Field Books

Gay TV Reality Chef Gets Hate Mail

This one is about a reality chef from The Great British Bakeoff. Even though I don’t bake I actually love this show and I remember this guy well. It's the kind of show you can binge watch and never give up. I think there are something like 7 or 8 seasons now. The people are so nice.

In any event, this is the kind of hate mail this chef got...

This week, he shared a letter he received from someone claiming to be a “huge fan” but who was “deeply offended” to learn he was gay when he appeared on...

Here’s the rest.

Don’t Tell Mayor Pete How To Be Gay

Here’s an opinion piece in response to comments made by Pete Buttigieg about the gay media...Buttigieg doesn't usually read the gay media. And he has his reasons. It’s not a totally negative piece but it is a bit self an amusing way. For one thing, the author seems to think gay men in Washington DC are more vicious than gay men in other places, and I'm not sure if he's been to New York or Boston.

I guess this all left me a little miffed. I honestly had this fantasy image in my head of him reading my columns out loud to that one-eyed dog of his.

You can read it in full here. It’s really another good example of how diverse gay men are in many respects. It’s also a bit amusing because he’s telling us how to be gay, again.

Gay Radio Host Allegedly Sends Gay Slur Tweet To Himself; Judy Garland the Ultimate Gay Icon; Ryan Field Books

Gay Radio Host Allegedly Sends Gay Anti-Gay Slur Tweet To Himself

This is one of those stories where the word "allegedly" is important to remember. A gay radio host in New Orleans, Seth Dunlap, received an anti-gay Tweet that referred to him with a well known gay pejorative that begins with the letter "F." But there's a twist to this story you'll find stunning.

Now, according to a police report, the station claims Dunlap tweeted the slur himself by accessing the station’s official Twitter account through his personal cellphone. Not only that, but he allegedly threatened to go “scorched earth” if they didn’t pay him $1.85 million in damages.

Here's the link for this one. It goes into a lot more detail, and I hope there's a follow up on this one. I'm curious to see if the allegations are true or not.

Judy Garland the Ultimate Gay Icon

I've posted before about how I don't understand the concept of gay icons. It's just something that passes me by completely because I never had a 'gay icon,' so this story is interesting to me on a personal level. I love certain Justin Guarini. I love everything about his performances and his voice. But I wouldn't say he's my 'icon.'

In any event, this article talks about the upcoming Judy Garland biopic, and it gets into why gay men have always been so infatuated with Garland.

Journalist, author and self-confessed Garland devotee Robert Leleux wrote in the New York Times 2012 that the LGBTQ+ community’s love of Garland – which he dubbed “Judyism” – was becoming “little more than a cultural memory”.

Here's the link. I remember Tony and I going to a party about 10 years ago and it wasn't the most thrilling party I'd ever been to. However, at midnight the host disappeared for about an hour, and then he returned dressed up as Judy Garland, in drag, and he put on a floor show right there in his house. He was actually very good, too. He looked better as Judy than he looked as himself.

The Gay Sex Ban In Singapore Is Challenged; Royal Barry Wills Architecture and Design: "Contemporary Colonial"; Ryan Field Books

The Gay Sex Ban In Singapore Is Challenged

Here's a story from the global front that I didn't even know existed. Obviously, there's a gay sex ban in Singapore. And one guy is trying to challenge it.

A 61-year-old retired general practitioner in Singapore has filed a legal action against the government to end the country’s ban on gay sex.

Here's the entire story. I hope he's successful. Unfortunately, there are still other countries with gay sex bans.

Royal Barry Wills Architecture and Design: "Contemporary Colonial"

This is way, way off topic for me, but I wanted to post something about the architect, Royal Barry Wills, to see if I could get any information about him. Tony and I own a rare Royal Barry Wills home and I can't seem to find any information about his contemporary designs. There are tons of articles about his traditional designs, but very little about his contemporary designs.

Wills was born in Melrose, Massachusetts, and in 1918 graduated from M.I.T as an architectural engineer. From 1919 until 1925, he worked as a design engineer for the Turner Construction Company of Boston, while engaging in his own architectural practice on the side. To advance his business, he regularly published sketch plans and elevations in the Boston Transcript

He's actually one of the most well known architects of the 20th Century and most famous for his traditional Cape Cod designs. But no one seems to know much about his contemporary designs. I found a few things on the web, but not all that much.

When Tony and I bought the house 17 years ago we were told it was the design of a well known architect, but at the time we didn't care much about that. We just liked the house and totally forgot about it. Then recently, someone contacted us and they told us it's actually a Royal Barry Wills design called "Contemporary Colonial,"  and we'd like to know more about it. There's just not that much info about the contemporaries. So if anyone out there knows anything about these designs please feel free to contact me. You can either comment here, or e-mail me. My e-mail is on the sidebar in the "About" section.

Ryan O'Connell On Being Gay and Disabled; Pete Buttigieg Clarifies Criticism of Gay Media; Ryan Field Books

Ryan O'Connell On Being Gay and Disabled

I really like this guy. He has a great TV show on Netflix called Special that I binge watched voraciously, and I love the comments me makes in public. This is the kind of gay content we should be getting all the time.

Writer, actor, and disability advocate Ryan O’Connell spoke to students at the University of Washington this week about the unique struggles he’s faced as someone who is both gay and disabled.

Here's more. It's definitely worth the click.

Pete Buttigieg Clarifies Criticism of Gay Media

I posted about Buttigieg and the gay media earlier this week, and here's a follow up story about it where he explains his comments about the gay media.

“Just to be clear: LGBTQ media plays an increasingly important role, especially at a time like this. I had a grumpy moment where I was thinking about some of the coverage that I do get frustrated with that seems to tell people how to be gay.

Here's a link to the rest. They certainly do scrutinize everything this man does. Once again, I think it shows how diverse gay men really are. You don't tell us how to be gay. WE tell you.
