What Does LGBTQ Plus Mean? Defining the LGBTQ Plus In Detail From Vanderbilt University

The other night a gay friend of mine on social media was questioning how someone who's not gay can identify as "queer." Several people commented with their thoughts on what "queer" meant, and each person had a slightly different POV.

I started wondering about all this and I realized I'm not totally sure what everything in LGBTQ plus means either, at least not totally sure. So I did a search and I found this list of definitions from Vanderbilt University. As far as I know, they cover all of them. They really do get into it. If there are more feel free to add them in the comments. Here's the one for "queer."

QUEER: a multi-faceted word that is used in different ways and means different things to different people. 1) Attraction to people of many genders. 2) Don’t conform to cultural norms around gender and/or sexuality. 3) A general term referring to all non-heterosexual people. Some within the community, however, may feel the word has been hatefully used against them for too long and are reluctant to embrace it.

Here's more. So, according to this, "queer" is a generalized word used by "non-heterosexual" people.  I tend to trust Vanderbilt University.
