PrEP Has Changed the Way We See HIV and AIDS and Now There's Apretude

I don't think there is a gay man alive who doesn't know someone on PrEP. I remember posting about it when it first came out and so far it has changed the way we all look at HIV. However, according to this article it says that PrEP has only worked for white gay men and white bi men. I didn't know that.

The article claims that PrEP has lowered HIV cases in large cities, but across the board it hasn't done much. I didn't know that either.

And now there's something new out there called "Apretude" to help fight HIV. Instead of taking Truvada (PrEP) daily, people can now get a shot every two months. It's interesting that they claim people respond better sticking to a schedule when getting shots than they do taking pills daily. I did know that. A doctor once told me that many with HIV forget to take their meds often.

Yet there are still obvious challenges in a society with so many equality issues.

“There are patients who are getting Apretude now, but it’s people who have health care access, who have health care literacy, who call their insurance companies and yell at the right people,” said Dr. Anu Hazra, a physician at the LGBTQ-focused Howard Brown Health in Chicago.
