Why Authors Use Pen Names/Pseudonyms; Russell Crowe's Jockstrap; White Gays "Whitesplainin" Racism

Why Authors Use Pen Names/Pseudonyms

When I first started getting published with LGBT presses like Alyson Books and Cleis Press, I made a conscious decision to use my own name and identity. I didn't want to hide the fact that I write gay fiction. I wanted to embrace it. Over the years I've posted about my real life here on the blog in many ways, from our wedding to cross country trips we've taken. In other words I have nothing to hide, especially not the fact that I'm writing gay fiction. And my conscious choice has always been to keep it real.

I don't have any regrets about that, however, I also know that many authors do use pen names for specific reasons. And those reasons are valid. At the suggestion of a publisher once, I did try using a pen name, but I found it too frustrating to deal with and I didn't continue doing it for long. Frankly, I didn't like doing it and I hated promoting a pen name. But it works for some authors, especially if they are hopping genres.

With that said, I wanted to link to a few good reasons why authors use pen names.

Some of the most well-known, famous authors have used a pen name to conceal their identities. For instance, have you ever heard of Richard Bachman? Well, it’s actually Stephen King, who has been known to write forwards in Bachman’s books (how’s that for tricky?). How about Robert Galbraith? Shockingly enough, that’s really the master of the wizarding world, J.K. Rowling!
You can check this out, here.  I think this particular article sums things up quickly and easily. And if you do a google search, you can find a great deal more about why authors use pen names.

But...if you are going to use a pen name, don't scam, catfish or break any laws. I've seen that happen and it never, ever ends well for the author. People will find out eventually and when they do you'll be sorry.

Russell Crowe's Jockstrap

Apparently, Russell Crowe is making a few life changes and he's scaling back a little with the sale of a few personal items.

It’s a tale as old as time: Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love and get married, fall out of love and get divorced nine years later. Boy sells used jockstrap on the internet.

Here's more. He's selling a few other interesting things, too.

White Gays "Whitesplainin" Racism

Here's a candid piece about racism in the gay community. It's articulate and very well written.

They apologize for the perpetrators and plead innocence on their behalf. Not racist by reason of ignorance, they whitesplain, particularly in Eastern Europe. “This is how racism works,” one person had the gall to begin a pontificating soliloquy that ended with this justification: Some European men are simply not accustomed to seeing black men and don’t know how to react.

You can check this out, here. There's a good deal of strong discussion on the comment thread.
