Lit Agent Marie Lamba Coming to Bucks County Romance Writers Group
Marie Lamba of the Jennifer DiChiara Literary Agency (I think in New York) is coming to the Bucks County Romance Writers Group this week. I found this in my local newspaper...the last one left around here in print...and figured I'd share with anyone in the Philadelphia area who might be interested in attending.
I actually think these things are good for readers as well as authors. I know I'm always interested in places where I can listen to people talk about books, publishing and other writers. I would also imagine that a lot of local romance authors will be there.
From the Bucks County Romance Writers web site:
As an Associate Literary Agent at the Jennifer DeChiara Literary Agency in NYC (jdlit.com), Lamba represents middle grade and YA fiction, adult and women’s fiction, and memoir. In addition to agenting, Lamba is also author of the young adult novels What I Meant… (Random House), Over My Head, and Drawn. Her work also appears in the short story anthology Liar Lair (Mendacity Press), the anthology Call Me Okaasan: Adventures in Multicultural Mothering (Wyatt-MacKenzie Publishing), and her articles are in more than 100 publications including national magazines such as Writer’s Digest and Garden Design. For more info you can visit her page at marielamba.com.
However, as is the case with most blog posts, I didn't see the who, what, when, where and why about this event. So the rest of the info is from my local newspaper, thank you very much.
Lamba will speak this Wednesday, Nov. 7th, at 7:30 pm in the Buckingham Municipal Building on Route 413. For those who don't know the area, that's at the intersection of RT 202 and 413, not far from Brown Brothers Auction. I'm not sure exactly which room, but I'm sure there will be signs and people there who can help you. And as far as I know most power has been restored to that section of Buckingham. I only live about three miles away and nothing seemed closed yesterday.
The talk is allegedly going to be focused on how to land a literary agent in what I would imagine would be the romance genre. I don't know much about the Jennifer DiChiara Agency or Marie Lamba, but I did post something about Lamba last June by coincidence. I liked what she had to say about publishing and the way things are changing. What I liked most was she actually spoke openly and honestly about the changes we're all going through without holding back. And I still believe that although self-publishing is great for some, working with a good publisher is a wonderful experience. I also think writers are going to need good agents more than ever before.
I don't think I'll be there on Wednesday. I would actually like to attend this event just to hear what Lamba has to say, but there's something else going on that night that involves a charity I like and I'm not sure I want to miss that (Gay Bingo). I'm also not a member of BCRWG, which is a chapter of RWA. The main reason being is that even though I have written gay romance, and a few hetero pg rated romances for publishers with pen names, I don't consider myself a romance writer. I love romance; I love the genre. I've never written anything without a happy ending. But I do crossover sometimes, and I like that freedom. And I don't want to be boxed into one particular genre as an author.
In any event, I highly respect what I've read about Marie Lamba (and what she's written) and I would encourage all those interested in romance writing to check it out. It's also free. And there's a nice gay bar/restaurant called The Raven about six miles away in New Hope where you can stop for a drink afterwards.
